This Weekend: After three straight games against teams from Atlantic Hockey, Brown closes out its first semester with a home-and-home series with its travel partner, Yale. The two Ivy rivals face off in New Haven on Thursday night and then close out the regular season series on Saturday night in Providence. The game in Providence is also the 2nd half of a double-header with the women's team, as Brown celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Meehan Auditorium. Following Saturday's contest against the Bulldogs, the Bears will break for nearly four weeks (27 days) for exams and the holidays. Brown's next game is not until December 30th when the Bears face New Hampshire in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
Meehan Auditorium 50th Anniversary: The 2011-12 season will mark the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Brown's George V. Meehan Auditorium, which opened during the 1961-62 season. Brown will feature a special center-ice logo as well as a patch that will be sported on its home and away uniforms. The men's and women's teams will host a doubleheader on December 3, to celebrate the anniversary. The women will take on Princeton at 3:00, while the men face Yale at 7:00. The first 1,000 fans for the day will receive a commemorative Meehan 50th Anniversary button. Brown will also recognize several key individuals in the Bears' hockey history prior to the games and during one intermission.
These Dates Historically Speaking: All time, Brown has played 15 total games on December 1st and 20 total games on December 3rd. The Bears are 7-7-1 in games played on December 1st and 5-9-6 in games played on December 3rd, including a 4-3 loss to Union last year. Brown 3-2-1 in away games played on December 1st and 2-2-4 in home games played on December 3rd. Brown and Yale never faced each other on either December 1st or 3rd.
Last Time Out: The Bears dropped a 2-0 decision on the road at Holy Cross, getting shutout for the second straight game and third time in their last four games after losses at home to AIC (3-0) on 11/22 and at RPI (1-0) on 11/12. Combined with a 1-1 tie at Army on 11/19, Brown has scored just once in its last four games. In the loss at Holy Cross, senior Mike Clemente recorded 28 saves on 30 shots, as Brown was outshot, 30-21, with the 21 shots a new season low this year for the Bears (the previous low had been 22 in the 1-0 loss at RPI). Senior Bobby Farnham and freshman Ryan Jacobson led Brown with four shots each, while three different players had two shots. Senior Jack Maclellan won 10 of 16 faceoffs to lead Brown.
Brown vs. Yale: Yale leads the all-time series with Brown, which dates back to the 1897-1898 season, by a 90-72-8 margin, including winning 14 of the last 17 games between the two programs. In fact, dating back to a Brown win on 12/9/06, the Bulldogs had won 11 straight contests, a streak that was snapped in March 2010 when Brown earned a 3-2 win in game #1 of the ECAC Quarterfinal series. The Bears would go on to win the series with a 1-0 win in game #3, as Yale took the 2nd game, 6-3. Last season, Brown split the regular-season series with the Bulldogs and dropped its season opener, 7-4, at the Ivy Showcase. During the regular season, each team won in its own rink with Yale earning a 5-2 win in New Haven and Brown earning a 3-2 win in Providence. It was the Bears' first regular-season win over Yale since a 3-2 overtime victory in December, 2006. Senior Jack Maclellan is Brown's statistical leader against the Bulldogs with 12 points (4g, 8a) in 12 career games, while senior Jeff Buvinow adds 10 points (2g, 8a) in 13 career games.
