Former Brown Oarsmen Compete at World Championships

Two former Bears were in action at the Rowing World
Championships in Poland on Thursday, as Steve van Knotsenbergis
qualified for the grand finals in the Canadian 8, while Nikola
Stojic '97 just missed qualifying for Serbia in the straight
pair.
Van Knotsenbergis and the Canadians made their way directly into
the finals by taking first in their heat, knocking off the
Netherlands, Russia, Italy, and Poland with a time of
6:02.58. The team rowed a blistering 1:24 first 500 meters,
seizing a lead that they would not relinquish, and holding on for
the win.
In the pair, Stojic narrowly missed a trip to the finals after
taking fourth in the A/B semifinals. Though Serbia rowed a
strong first 1000 meters, holding second place halfway through the
race, the effort took a toll, and the pair faded into fourth down
the stretch. Great Britain won the semi with a time of 6:30,
with Stojik coming in fourth at 6:34, less than a second from
qualifying.
The finals of the men's eight will take place on Sunday, August
30th. Racing Canada for the world championship will be
Poland, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
