Bears Come Up Gold in Season Debut

Rochester, N.Y. – The men's crew kicked off their
fall season with an impressive showing at the Head of the Genesee
over the weekend, taking first and second in the varsity eight, as
well as a first in the varsity four. The freshmen were in
action as well, taking first place in the novice eight at the Head
of the Housatonic as they easily held off a pair of Yale boats for
the win.
At the Genesee, the varsity “A” boat began the day with
a blistering 14:36 in the head race portion of the competition,
establishing a commanding early lead. Bruno's
“B” boat rowed the course in 14:55, still well ahead of
the first non-Brown boat, which crossed the line in 15:13, while
the “C” squad took fifth in the head race with a
15:24. The afternoon was more of the same, as each of the
Brown boats reprised their morning performances with strong sprint
races, including a 4:16.58 from the “A” boat that was
seven seconds ahead of the nearest competition. The Bears
finished with overall times of 27:25 and 28:04 for the top two
boats, easily outstripping Western Ontario, which took third with
an overall time of 28:27.
The varsity four turned in an equally impressive showing, as the
Bears took another easy first. After rowing the head race in
17:09 to take a 24 second lead early, Brown rowed the sprint
portion in an even five minutes, running their overall time to
32:10, and taking the gold medal by a 40-second margin over the
University of Vermont.
Rowing at the more conventionally organized Head of the Housatonic,
the Brown freshmen also turned in an impressive showing in their
collegiate debut. Bruno's “A” boat started
in the first position, a sometimes difficult challenge, but rose
well to the occasion, steadily rowing away from the field to finish
in 15:51. Yale took second in 16:07, while Brown's
“B” boat crossed the line in 20:15, good for sixth
place overall.
The Bears will be back in action this weekend, as the team travels
to compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in
Boston.
