Why Brown? “I was walking home after school, on one of my first days back on land since sailing around the world, when I rounded the final corner and couldn’t see our temporary rental house. Instead, a 45-foot-long passenger bus with a red and gold mural of a bald eagle holding the American flag and a banner that read ‘Texas’ painted along the side was parked in front. When I walked up, my dad shouted, ‘Get in, we’re moving!’ My family and I are nomads. We were never wired to remain in one place, comfortable with constancy. But when I come home to the bus (often in a new location) every day, my sister and I study together, my brother and I practice football together, all of us fall asleep together to the same sound: usually, depending on the neighborhood, the screeching of mating cats.
Our nomadic lifestyle requires us to call each other ‘home.’ But this insular definition of community hasn’t narrowed my perspective; it has broadened it. My greatest influences are people who took the road less traveled and stayed the course even when others gasped, ‘you’re crazy!’ They’re people who trust themselves and have visions of the future that are informed by their imagination, not what has already been done. With this definition of community, I am certain Brown will feel just like home.”
