Notes: Sailing became a varsity sport at Brown prior to the 2020-21 academic year … Earned All-NEISA honors in 2019-20 … Also competed on Brown’s skiing team, representing the Bears at USCSA nationals … Serves as a co-founder of the NEISA TIDE organization for inclusion, diversity, and equity.
2022-23: Named an All-NEISA Second Team Crew … Named to All-Ivy Second Team … Represented Brown at the Women’s Team Race Nationals, helped the Bears place third … Helped Brown place first at the Duplin Women’s Team Race and the Dellenbaugh Women’s Team Race … Competed during a total of 11 weekends for the Bears throughout the season.
2021-22: Helped Brown place fifth at the Women’s Fleet Race Nationals … Helped Brown win the Duplin Women’s Team Race … Also competed during the weekends of Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Oct. 30, March 19, April 2, and April 9.
2020-21: Did not compete … Season shortened due to COVID-19.
Before Brown: Captained both sailing and skiing teams … Raced for coaches Myles Everett and Kevin Schwarm … Also competed in alpine skiing … Earned a spot on the Maine State Ski Team in 2018 … Gained All-Conference and Academic All-Conference accolades … Garnered a spot in the Yarmouth Skiing Hall of Fame … Competed on the club level for Saddleback Ski Club, Gould Academy Competition Program, and SailMaine … National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Personal: Emilia is the daughter of Phyllidia Ku-Ruth ’93 and William Ruth; both Phyllidia and William graduated from Brown’s Alpert Medical School in 1997 … Has one younger sibling, GW … Plays the trombone … Enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and martial arts … Mechanical Engineering and East Asian Studies double concentrator.
Why Brown? “I chose Brown because it allowed me to pursue engineering despite having a much stronger English and communications background. It also gave me the opportunity to walk on to one of the best sailing teams in the country from a small community sailing program.”
