Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair Patrick Laughlin announced the hiring of Steve Bode as the Zisson Family Assistant Coaching Chair for Men's Soccer on Thursday.
“I am thrilled to have Steve Bode joining the Men's Soccer staff here at Brown,” said Laughlin. “He stood out not only for his ability as a coach but as an outstanding person. Steve is well prepared for this new challenge and I expect him to adapt quickly and really help us this spring.”
Bode comes to Brown following eight seasons as an assistant coach at Marquette, where he was recently recognized as one of the nation’s top Division I assistant coaches according to CollegeSoccerNews.com.
At Marquette, Bode assisted in landing a top-20 recruiting class and coached three Golden Eagles that were drafted to the MLS in 2015. He assisted in a top-25 recruiting class in 2014, while the team was consistently ranked in the top-25 throughout the season and reached No. 10 in the NSCAA Poll. Bode has assisted in developing 10 players who have played professionally in the past five years, including four MLS draft selections.
In 2013, Bode helped coach a Marquette squad that reached its first-ever Sweet 16 prior to falling to Virginia in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The postseason run capped an accomplished season that featured BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships.
In 2012, Marquette earned the No. 7 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, its first NCAA postseason appearance since 1997. In 2011, Bode was a member of the Marquette staff that earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors after claiming their first BIG EAST Conference championship.
In addition to his coaching duties, Bode serves as a scout for the US Soccer Development Academy, where he identifies and evaluates local talent in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas for Team USA. Bode currently holds his USSF "B" coaching license.
Bode graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2008, and earned a Master's degree in Educational Policy and Leadership from Marquette University in 2011.
As a player at Milwaukee, Bode was a three-time team captain and two-time Most Valuable Player. He started all 83 games he played in his career. In 2003 and 2005, Bode matched a single-season school-record starting 23 games for the Panthers. Bode was named the Milwaukee Panthers' Male Athlete of the Year in 2007. He also received the Herman Kluge Award, an annual honor given for academic and athletic achievement and dedication to community service, following the 2007-08 season.
Bode was drafted by Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in the 2008 MLS supplemental draft, and he was also taken by the Milwaukee Wave. As a professional, Bode played in reserve games with the Fire.
