Tim Weaver spent six years (five seasons) with Brown football as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2019-2024. Upon his arrival on College Hill, Weaver brought 27 years of college coaching experience, including 11 years as a defensive coordinator or co-coordinator, seven years as a head coach, and four years as a special teams coordinator.
In 2023, Weaver oversaw a Bears’ defense that helped Brown post its best overall record since 2015 and best league record since 2016. Brown’s defense has improved incrementally each season under Weaver, with the 2023 defense allowing over 13 fewer points and 49 fewer yards per game since 2021. Cornerback Isaiah Reed earned First Team All-Ivy and All-New England honors after leading the league with five interceptions and 13 passes defended, and Brown was the only team in the Ivy League to have four players rank in the top seven in the league in passes defended.
In 2022, he helped mentor linebackers Junior Gafa and Isaiah Gamble to Phil Steele All-Ivy honors. In 2021, Gafa was named Second Team All-Ivy after leading the team in tackles.
In his first season at Brown in 2019, Weaver helped tutor defensive tackle Michael Hoecht, who earned Second Team All-Ivy honors. Hoecht went on to sign with the Los Angeles Rams and won the Super Bowl LVI title in February 2022.
Brown’s 2020 competitive season was canceled due to COVID-19.
Weaver came to Brown from the University of Delaware, where he spent four years as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
At Delaware, the Blue Hens’ defense improved from 97th in 2013 to 24th in the FCS in two seasons. The 2015 Delaware defense was 17th nationally in rush defense, 22nd in scoring defense and allowed only 20 offensive touchdowns in 11 games. Delaware produced 13 All-CAA defensive players during Weaver’s tenure, including the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year, Blaine Woodson, in 2014.
Weaver previously served from 2006-12 as the head coach at Bethany College in the state of West Virginia. He added Director of Athletics duties in August 2008. As head football coach, Weaver led the turnaround from three consecutive 1-9 seasons to four wins in his first year. He and his staff also recruited the school’s career leaders in passing, rushing, receiving, and tackles.
Weaver’s coaching career also includes serving as an assistant coach at Ivy League members Harvard and Columbia. Serving at Harvard from 1999-2002, Weaver was the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach for the Crimson’s 2001 undefeated Ivy League championship team. He then moved on to Columbia in 2003 and was the defensive coordinator for the Lions through 2005.
Weaver began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at NCAA III institution Western Connecticut State in 1990-91 and moved on to coach the defensive line at Hofstra in 1992-95. Hofstra made its first trip to the FCS playoffs in 1995, ranking in the top 10 in 1-AA in several defensive categories. Weaver also served as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at NCAA Division II member West Virginia Wesleyan from 1996-98.
Weaver earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology from Davidson College in 1990 where he was a four-year starter at defensive end and linebacker.
While at Brown, Weaver and his wife, Kelly, lived in Lincoln, R.I. with their two daughters, Delaney and Casey.
