Michaela Scanlon, the only head coach in the history of the Brown varsity equestrian program, enters her 26th season at the helm of Brown University equestrian in 2021-22, and since 1985 she has involved herself in equestrian events as an instructor, coach, district commissioner, and performer.
From 1985-90 she wore a number of hats at the Aquidneck Pony Club and coached show jumping and dressage teams at national competitions in Kentucky and Virginia.
In 1987 she became the equestrian coach at Roger Williams College, a position that she held for 10 years. Among her students was Matthew Walby, who won the individual Open Rider over Fences Championships at the 1992 ISHA Nationals.
Since 1996 she has served as the Brown equestrian coach. The team trains at Warren’s Windswept Farm, which is a full service boarding and lesson facility that is part of Chace Farm.
Scanlon’s Brown teams have captured 11 Region One Championships, five Zone Reserve Championships, one Zone Championship, and six Ivy Championships. The first Ivy League school to ever qualify for National competition, Brown has made the National Team Championships six times and placed in the top ten each time.
She has coached several national individual champions. In the Cacchione Cup that recognizes the overall high point rider, Amanda Forte won every single individual event at the 2001 Nationals and in subsequent years other riders placed second, fourth, fifth, and eighth.
As a competitor herself Scanlon has earned the U. S. Dressage Federation’s Bronze Medal for Dressage and is in training for the Silver Medal.
