PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four Brown pitchers combined to twirl a one-hitter on Tuesday afternoon in a 4-1 win over Quinnipiac at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium. Ian Keusch, Matt Wilmarth, Brenden Kline and Christian Keel held the Bobcats hitless over the final eight innings as the Bears offense took the lead with three runs in the seventh.
Six different Brown players combined for six hits, with freshman Matt Luigs and senior DJ Dillehay each collecting two RBIs. Junior Andrew Hanlon reached base three times and scored a run.
Keusch went the first 3.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit. Willmarth tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, Kline used a big double play to toss a scoreless sixth inning, and Keel earned the win by tossing the final three inning and also compiled the only three strikeouts for the Bears' pitching staff in the game.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single sandwiched around three walks. Hanlon tagged a runner out at the plate on a wild pitch that bounced off the backstop and right back towards the box to help Brown escape the inning.
Alex Benevento led off the bottom of the fourth by reaching third base after an error on the right fielder, but a strikeout and double play kept Brown off the board.
The Bears evened the score in the fifth when Jack Edmunds led off with a single and later scored on a sac fly by Luigs.
The Bears took the lead with three runs on three hits in the seventh. With runners on second and third with nobody out, Luigs lined one off the pitcher for an RBI single to give Brown the lead. Three batters later with two outs, Dillehay laced one through the left side to score Luigs and Logan Meusy with two key insurance runs to spot the Bears a 4-1 lead.
The Bears will return to action this Friday-Sunday, March 13-15 with a three-game series at Seton Hall.
