PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's basketball team (16-8, 8-4 Ivy) defeated the Cornell Big Red (8-17, 3-9 Ivy) 62-47 on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Following the win, Brown clinched the program's second Ivy Madness berth since the tournament began in 2017.
The Bears now tally 16 overall wins, and eight Ivy on the season. Their eighth Ivy wins sets a program-best under Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc, with 16 wins matching her highest single-season total with Brown.
Grace Arnolie knocked down three triples against the Big Red, bringing her to a total of 204 three-pointers in her career at Brown. She now enters fifth place in program history in career threes. Arnolie added 23 points for her ninth 20-point game of the season, and shot 57% (8-14) from the floor tonight.
Olivia Young was the second Bear to close out Friday night's contest in double figures. She netted 14 points and shot 44% (4-9) from beyond the arc. Young grabbed nine rebounds, tying her career-high for the third time this season.
The Big Red got on the board first with two quick baskets from Clarke Jackson. The Bears responded with two baskets of their own from Grace Arnolie, tying the score at four. Arnolie and Beth Nelson hit back-to-back triples, holding Brown to a 12-7 advantage with two minutes left in the first quarter. The Bears tacked on three more points, leading 15-9 after the opening 10 minutes.
A three-pointer from Cornell's Emily Pape tied the score up once more at 16, to begin the second quarter. Ada Anamekwe gave Brown a two-point upperhand before Rachel Kaus hit a jumper to tie the score again at 18. Charlotte Adams-Lopez found her rhythm midway through the second, going on a solo 7-0 run. Adams-Lopez scored seven points in just 90 seconds, converting on a layup, three-pointer, and two free throws to help the Bears pull away from the Big Red. Cornell ran into foul trouble in the final minute of the first half, and the Bears took advantage, making four free throws to close out the first half.
Brown held Cornell to just nine points in both the first and second quarters, and led 29-18 at the break.
Young knocked down a triple 15 seconds into the second half, to get the Bears going. Both teams exchanged baskets, before Brown went on a 15-3 run to close out the quarter. The Big Red scored 11 points in the third, but the Bears matched that total twice over with a game-high 22.
