Women’s Basketball Earns 77-65 Win Over Penn in Double Overtime Thriller

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's basketball team (10-4, 2-0 Ivy) earned its second conference win 77-65, in a thrilling double overtime contest over the Penn Quakers (10-5, 0-2 Ivy) on Saturday afternoon inside of the Pizzitola Sports Center.
For the fourth consecutive game, four Bears closed out Saturday afternoon's contest in double-figures.
Senior guard Grace Arnolie led the way for the Bears with 24 points. Arnolie's performance marks her 11th consecutive game in double figures, and fifth 20 point game this season. Her stat line for the day consisted of nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Senior forward Ada Anamekwe had one of her best games of the season this afternoon, setting multiple season-highs. Anamekwe netted 13 points, made seven free throws, and grabbed nine rebounds. She went 3-6 from the field, and 7-9 from the free throw line. Anamekwe made her way to the starting lineup for the first time this season, after making eight appearances.
Junior guard Olivia Young clocked a season-high 41 minutes this afternoon, and netted the third-most points for Brown with 12. Young grabbed six rebounds, assisted on two baskets, blocked two shots, and posted a steal.
Senior forward Alyssa Moreland scored 12 points for the afternoon, with nine rebounds, four blocks, two steals, and an assist.
The Bears opened up their second conference contest strong, going on a 9-0 run spanning half of the quarter. Brown went on a short 5-0 run before the end of the quarter, outscoring Penn 16-7. The Bears were able to hold its opponent to single digits throughout the first 10, making it their eighth game with this stat.
The Bears continued to go hard in the paint, and capitalized on multiple and ones ahead of the half. The Quakers put up eight points in the final minute of the second quarter, but were unable to catch up to the Bears before the break. Brown held a four point edge at halftime (28-24).
Competition remained extremely tight coming out of the break, with Brown netting 13 points to Penn's 12. The Quakers came within one point of the Bears at the six and a half minute mark, but Anamekwe countered as she made two free throws to give Brown a three point gap. From that point on, the Quakers only scored twice more in the quarter keeping their distance from the Bears.
Scoring bounced back and forth in the final quarter of regulation, with Penn's Mataya Gayle tying the score up at 50 with just 22 seconds on the clock.
Young netted a jumper shortly into the first overtime, putting the Bears back in motion. Penn countered with a triple that Arnolie then reciprocated to keep Brown up by two points. The Quakers knocked down two free throws to tie the score at 55. Young and Moreland tacked on four more points halfway through the first overtime. Free throws continued to push Penn past Brown, before Moreland made a crucial layup with 24 seconds left to tie the score once more at 61. Young came in clutch, blocking Simone Sawyer's three-pointer with two seconds left on the clock to send it to double overtime.
The Bears opened up the second overtime with an 8-0 run led by senior forward Beth Nelson and Young, pulling away from the Quakers. The run helped give Brown some space early on in the second overtime, ultimately helping them secure the win. The Bears outscored the Quakers 16-4 in the second overtime earning them their second-straight conference win, and fourth consecutive win overall. Brown remains undefeated (5-0) at home in the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears will spend the long weekend in New York as they take on the Cornell Big Red on Saturday, Jan. 17, before heading into the city to face the Columbia Lions on Monday, Jan. 19. Saturday's tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m., with Monday's set for 2 p.m.
