Laurel Moody Named Ivy League Softball Player of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball's Laurel Moody was unanimously selected as the Ivy League Player of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday (May 7). Moody becomes the first Bear since 2012 and the fifth Bear in program history to be named Player of the Year.
Moody was also unanimously selected as First Team All-Ivy, earning the honor for the first time in her career. She was joined on the First Team by senior pitcher Alexis Guevara. First year outfielder Amanda Deng was named Second Team All-Ivy while junior outfielder Jasmine Hsiao and sophomore outfielder Kaicee Klus were named Honorable Mention All-Ivy. Leah Carey was named Academic All-Ivy.
Moody rewrote the Brown record book on her way to Player of the Year honors, while leading the Ivy League in almost every offensive category. The Carlsbad, Calif., native led the Ivy League in batting average (.443), slugging percentage (.855), on base percentage (.542), hits (58), runs batted in (41), home runs (15) and total bases (112), while tying for the league lead with 30 walks.
During league play, Moody increased her batting average to a league-best .462 and upped her slugging percentage to a league-best .892. Moody also led or was tied for the league lead in on base percentage (.532), hits (30), home runs (9) and total bases (58).
Over the course of the season, Moody broke the Brown single season record for home runs, runs batted in and walks. The senior is currently tied for the program record for single season hits.
Guevara was named First Team All-Ivy for the second time in her career after posting a career-best season for her final campaign on College Hill. Over the course of the year, Guevara led the Ivy league with 17 wins, 149 strikeouts and a 1.89 ERA, becoming the only pitcher over the full season in the Ivy League to post a sub-2.00 ERA.
The Chula Vista, Calif., native was tied for the league lead in wins during Ivy League play with nine, while finishing second in strikeouts (67) and third in ERA (2.54). During the season, Guevara broke Brown's single season strikeout record and career strikeout record. Guevara's 14 strikeouts against Central Connecticut was the highest by any pitcher in the Ivy League this season.
In her first year at Brown, Deng was third on the team in batting, hitting .305 on the season, while leading the team with four triples. Her 40 hits and 25 runs batted in were the second most on the team. During Ivy League play, the Fremont, Calif., native upped her average to .328 and led Brown with six doubles while collecting 12 RBI. Deng struck out just three times in 64 at bats during league play.
Hsiao earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors for the third-straight season, finishing the year with a .288 average. Hsiao solidified Brown's leadoff spot, finishing the season second on the team in runs scored (29) and home runs (5). The junior added eight doubles and one triple over the course of the year. In Ivy games, Hsiao hit at a .315 clip and finished the with second most hits (23), home runs (3) and runs scored (17) on the team.
Klus earned her first All-Ivy honor of her career, finishing the season second on the team with a .333 batting average, picking up 26 hits in 34 games. Klus scored 18 runs and drove in three while finishing the year with one double and 12 walks.
