Softball Hosts Princeton With Ivy Tournament in Sight

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball begins a three-game series against Princeton on Friday (May 2) with sights on the Ivy Tournament.
The series will begin with a single game on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. On Saturday (May 3) the two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. All games of the series will be streamed on ESPN+.

THE FIRST PITCH
Brown is on a four-game win streak after sweeping Yale last weekend and beating Providence on Wednesday. The Bears have now set a program record for Ivy League wins in a season, now having 12. The previous record is 10, set multiple times, including last season.
The Bears 29 wins are now the fourth-most in program history. One more win would give the Bears their first 30-win season since 1992.
Brown's win over Providence broke a 10-game losing streak to the Friars. It was also the first win on the road for the Bears against Providence since 2000. With the win, Brown finished the season 4-0 against Ocean State opponents.
Edie Cobb threw a complete game in the win against Providence, firing a career-high in innings (7) and strikeouts (3). Cobb's first strikeout of the game in the second inning set Brown's program record for strikeouts by a pitching staff with 222. Cobb induced 13 groudouts in the win.
Alexis Guevara was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week for the fifth time this season after going 3-0 last weekend with a 1.33 ERA. Guevara finished the weekend with 26 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched and walked just two batters.
Guevara's 15 wins are the most in a season by a Bear since Katie King had 18 in the 1996 season. With Guevara's 15 wins and Macy Borowski's 10, Brown now has the first season with two 10-win pitchers since 1993.
Against Central Connecticut, Guevara set the program records for career strikeouts (327) and single season strikeouts (128).
Laurel Moody finished the weekend with six walks and is now tied for the program record with 28 walks in a season. Moody, who set the program record for home runs in a season (14) earlier this year, is also four hits and seven runs single season records.
As a team, Brown sits in second place for team program records in runs scored (219), home runs (30) and runs batted in (183).
Mary Holt-Kelsch set the record for program wins in a season for a first-year head coach with her 23rd win of the season when Brown beat Harvard 8-2 on April 19. Holt-Kelsch has doubled the most Ivy wins by a first-year coach at Brown, the previous mark was six wins, set by two different coaches.
TOURNAMENT IMPLICATIONS
With one win against Princeton, Brown with clinch a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for the first time in program history.
If the Bears were to sweep the Tigers, Brown would earn a share of the regular season title and host the Ivy League Tournament on May 8-10.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
Princeton is 24-15 overall and 15-3 in Ivy League play. The Tigers are on a six-game win streak and clinched a share of the Ivy League title with a sweep over Penn last weekend. Prior to the sweep over Princeton, the Tigers lost two of three against Columbia.
Eight batters in the lineup are hitting over .300 with Sonia Zhang and Jessica Phelps leading the way at .367. Karis Ford is leading the team with nine home runs and 34 RBI.
Brielle Wright leads in the circle with a 2.91 ERA in 113.0 innings and has 99 strikeouts. Cassidy Shaw has a team-high 12 wins with 87 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Brown is 19-66-1 all-time against Princeton but the Bears have won three of the last five meetings against the Tigers. Brown took the series at Princeton last season taking the first and third games of the series.
