Men's Lacrosse Battles to End Against #1 Cornell
4/5/2025 3:17:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-7, 0-3 Ivy League) gave the top-ranked Cornell Big Red (9-1, 4-0 Ivy League) all they could handle Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field, but the Big Red pulled away in the final minutes to take a 13-9 conference win.
The Bears recognized the 1985 Ivy League Championship at halftime. The 1985 squad went a perfect 6-0 in Ivy League play.
"We executed at a championship level for three quarters today," said head coach Jon Torpey. "Unfortunately, the fourth Quarter got away from us and the possessions were stacked in Cornell's favor.
"Cornell is a very well coached DI Championship level team in 2025, and I was proud of the fight our team showed throughout the game. It was also great to see some guys step in and step up this week with some injuries. We have some work to do but I believe we will see the best version of our team moving forward."
Brown and Cornell traded goals in the opening quarter with both teams finding twine three times. Spencer Hughes, Ben Scandone, and Brady O'Kane found the back of the net for the Bears with Matteo Corsi and Luke Dellicicchi adding assists.
Wyatt Knust (12 saves) turned aside four shots for the Big Red in the opening frame with Connor Foley (8 saves) making three saves.
Aidan McLane recorded his 100th career point with 13:26 remaining in the second quarter to even the score at 4-4.
After Cornell's Michael Long pushed the score to 5-4, Matteo Corsi and Jeremy Hopsicker scored consecutive goals to give Brown its first lead of the game with 4:05 remaining in the half.
Cornell responded with consecutive goals from Walker Wallace, CJ Kirst, and Andrew Dalton to take an 8-6 lead to the third quarter.
Owen Richter opened the third quarter with his second goal of the season to bring the Bears within a goal 12 seconds into the half. From there, Hugh Kelleher and O'Kane traded goals to give Cornell a 9-8 lead at the end of the third quarter.
O'Kane capped the hat trick with 8:44 remaining in the fourth off an assist from Foley to once again bring the Bears even with the Big Red at 9-9. Less than a minute later, Kirst tallied his third of the game to put Cornell ahead by one.
The Big Red pulled away in the final minutes of the fourth with two goals from Willem Firth and another from Kirst to push the score to 13-9.
