No. 7 Women's Crew Gears Up for Senior Day Against Cornell
4/24/2025 10:13:00 AM | Women's Crew
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After two days of intense competition at the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Brown prepares for an Ivy League battle in the familiar waters of the Seekonk River as they host the Cornell Big Red this Friday.
With this being the only home race of the season, the Bears are ready to honor their eight seniors: Riley Cooper, Annie Herring, Juliette Hopgood, Jessica McGrady, Elizabeth Polydefkis, Audrey Roche, Caroline Schmitz, and Nadia Vondeling.Â
The excitement for Friday evening is palpable, with a few seniors discussing the significance of this home race. "I would say that the team is really excited to have a race at home and show off our speed," said Juliette Hopgood. "We don't have home races very often so this is a great opportunity for people to watch if they aren't able to make it to an away race, and it's always more special to race on home turf."
Elizabeth Polydefkis also spoke about the importance of racing at home and some of the challenges with the racecourse on the Seekonk River. "I'm really exited for our home race this year. Most teams avoid racing on the Seekonk because of the unpredictable wind, tide, and generally challenging rowing conditions; however, despite this, Cornell chooses to travel the six hours to race us," said Polydefkis. "I am incredibly grateful for their commitment, and as a senior, I am looking forward to one last official race on the Seekonk."
The Bears, who remain as the seventh ranked team in the country according to the latest CRCA Pocock Poll, are coming off of a highly competitive weekend of racing in Florida. The V8, 2V8, A4, and B4 all recorded multiple podium finishes across the two days of the Big Ten Invitational, building on what has been a strong first season at the helm for Loyalty Chair for Women's Crew Head Coach Tessa Gobbo-Zimmerman '13 and her staff. Â
The start times for Friday's slate of races are as follows:
C4- 5:15 p.m.
3V- 5:35 p.m.
B4- 5:55 p.m.
A4- 6:15 p.m.
2V- 6:35 p.m.
1V- 6:55 p.m.
