Big Day for Rookies Helps Baseball Take Down Bryant 10-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team used two big innings to top Bryant by a score of 10-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium. Freshman Christian Butera collected five of Brown's eight hits on the day and fellow first-year Alex Benevento clubbed his first collegiate homer in the win. The victory gives Brown the season series victory over Bryant for the first time since 2017.
Butera entered the game as the Ivy League's fourth-leading hitter and went 5-for-5 with a run and an RBI, the first Brown player to register five hits in a game since Reece Rappoli against URI in 2022. Benevento had two hits including the home run and three RBIs, junior Mika Petersen had a hit and scored two runs, and junior Mark Henshon added two runs and two RBIs. On the mound, freshman Ian Keusch started and tossed 2.0 hitless innings, Carter Barth picked up his first college win with 2.0 solid innings of relief, and Christian Keel and Peter Dubie both tallied scoreless relief appearances.
Bryant jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run homer to left field by Drew Wyers.
Brown roared back with a five-run bottom of the fourth to take the lead. Petersen led off with a double and came in two batters later on a single by Butera. Henshon added an RBI fielder's choice to plate DJ Dillehay to make it 2-2. Later in the inning, Benevento sat all over a 3-2 fastball and crushed a no doubt line drive out to left field for his first collegiate homer, a three-run shot that put the Bears in front 5-2.
Brown tacked on five more in the fifth, sending 11 men to the plate and taking advantage of four walks, three hit batters and one base hit to hold a 10-2 lead after five.
Bryant made things interesting with three runs (two unearned) in the seventh before Stiles Begnaud came in and slammed the door on the rally. The Bulldogs edged closer with an unearned run off two hits and a passed ball in the eighth but were unable to score again.
Brown will welcome Yale to Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium for a three-game series this weekend. With impending inclement weather, check the schedule at BrownBears.com for the latest updates.
