PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bears traveled to Princeton to compete in the inaugural Ivy Tournament on Sunday, with five wrestlers picking up multiple wins each in postseason play.
Hunter Adrian (133), #31 Blake Saito (157), Drew Clearie (174), and Alex Semenenko (285) all won their first matches of the day to advance to the second round of the championship bracket. All four wrestlers also picked up victories in the consolation bracket as well.
Hunter Adrian, fresh off his 2nd Team All-Ivy selection, defeated Connor Smith (Columbia) twice on the day by technical fall.
Alex Semenenko picked up his thirteenth pinfall victory of the season by defeating Logan Marissal (Harvard) in 2:38. Semenenko entered the weekend tied for 4th place in NCAA DI for pinfalls this season with 12.
Joey Iamunno (149) also scored a pinfall victory, his sixth of the season, against Jaden Pepe (Harvard) in 3:15.
Keegan Rothrock (165) was the highest placing Brown wrestler at the Ivy Tournament, finishing in 3rd place for his weight class. Rothrock defeated Blaine Bergey (Princeton) and Andy Troczynski (Penn) in the consolation bracket, winning his final match against Troczynski by pinfall in 5:48.
"As old and prestigious as the Ivy League is, there aren't too many firsts left. I twas a special opportunity to compete in the first Ivy League Wrestling Championship. I'm proud of the whole team for the strong season they have put together, and it was fun to watch Keegan Rothrock finish his career on the podium in 3rd place," said Head Coach Jordan Leen.
"Otherwise, it was a disappointing day narrowly missing out on automatic NCAA qualifications at 141 and 157, where we earned allocations for the conference and also at 165 and 184 where we were just a match away from qualifying. That being said, we expect Blake Saito to receive an at-large bid at 157 and Ian Oswalt also has a decent chance to receive an at-large bid at 141 as a result of the string seasons they have put together."
