Baseball Opens Up Weekend with First Ivy Win at Cornell
3/28/2025 5:04:00β―PM | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y. β A three-hit afternoon for junior Mika Petersen and a strong showing from the Brown bullpen help lift the Brown baseball team to a 5-4 win at Cornell on Friday, giving the Bears their first Ivy League victory of the year.
Β
Petersen reached base four times in five plate appearances with three hits including a double and triple, a walk and two RBIs. Junior DJ Dillehay added two hits and an RBI, including what proved to be the game-winning knock in the seventh inning. Freshman Jack Edmunds had two hits including an RBI single and a triple, and Christian Butera added a hit and RBI. Senior Gunner Boree also tallied two hits and a run scored.
Β
Starter Santhosh Gottam went the first 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, which included no runs on just two hits through the first five innings. Peter Dubie picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief, and shutdown innings from juniors Stiles Begnaud and Christian Keel (who earned the save) helped seal the win. All told, Brown pitching held the Big Red to just five hits.
Β
Cornell put men at second and third with nobody out to start the second, but Gottam came back to get a strikeout, pop out, and flyout to escape the jam.
The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third when Nathan Brasher got on with a hit-by-pitch and came in to score on a double by Petersen. Butera later added an RBI ground out.
Β
Edmunds skyed a long triple off the left-centerfield wall to open the top of the sixth but was left stranded as Cornell escaped the jam.
Β
After being held to just two hits and no walks through the first five innings, Cornell broke though to take the lead in the sixth with three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Β
The Bears got all three runs right back in the top of the seventh to retake the lead. Boree led off the frame with a single and came in to score two batters later on a triple by Petersen. Dillehay followed by lining an 0-2 pitch the other way to right field for an RBI single, and Edmunds later tacked on an RBI single to push the lead to 5-3.
Β
Β
The Big Red used a walk, infield single and sac fly to pull within one in the bottom of the seventh, but that was as close as they would get as Begnaud tossed a scoreless eighth and Keel retired the side in order in the ninth for his first career save.
Β
The two teams will look to finish off their weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.
