JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Brown baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at North Florida. The Bears' rally fell short in a 7-4 loss in game one, before getting stymied in an 8-0 loss in seven innings in game two.
Senior Nathan Brasher and junior DJ Dillehay had two hits apiece in the opener, with Dillehay contributing three RBIs. Junior Stiles Begnaud tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in the opener. Freshman Christian Butera picked up his first collegiate hit in the nightcap.
GAME 1
Brown put men at the corners with two down in the first but was unable to score. UNF put a run on the board in the bottom of the first on a throwing error with two outs for the early lead. Brown starter Christian Keel settled in and retired the next nine Ospreys in a row through the third inning.
The Ospreys broke the skid with a single and two-run homer to start the fourth inning to push the lead to 3-0, then used four straight hits to start the fifth, including a two-run triple, to extend the lead to 6-0.
Brown broke a string of 14 batters in a row retired with a big four-run sixth inning. After a double by Brasher, a walk, and a hit batsman, Dillehay provided the big blow with a bases clearing three-run double down the left field line to cut the deficit in half, 6-3. Dillehay later scored on a two-out error that made it 6-4 before the inning ended with a runner cut down at home plate.
UNF manufactured an insurance run in the eighth with a double, bunt and sac fly.
Brown put four runners on base over the final three innings but were unable to draw closer.
GAME 2
North Florida put up all eight runs between the second and fifth innings, all of them earned. A double and two singles plated a pair of runs in the second, a three-run double highlighted a four-run third, and a single and a sac fly made it 7-0 in the fourth. A double and an RBI single in the fifth inning tacked on another run to make it 8-0.
UNF starter Bryson Treichel retired the first 13 batters he faced before hitting consecutive batters in the fifth. The Bears mustered singles in the sixth and seventh innings but stranded both runners.
Treichel and Clayton Boroski combined on the two-hit shutout for UNF with no walks and six strikeouts.
Both teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
