ST. CHARLES, MO. - The Bears began a weekend full of wrestling with a trip to Missouri to compete in the Hustle in the Heartland Invitational. Brown (2-1) split Friday at Francis Howell High School, falling to No. 6 Nebraska 44-3 and defeating LIU 29-17.
"It was great for our guys to get the opportunity to wrestle a team like Nebraska," Marvin Wilenzik '56 Head Coaching Chair for Brown Wrestling Jordan Leen said. "They outclassed us in most spots, but we were right there in others. I'm confident that the experience will continue to fuel our development."
"Our next match against Long Island was physical across the board and tightly contested at some weights. We had a few guys who weren't pleased with their performances against Nebraska, and it was nice to see them bounce back with more aggression and consistency."
The Huskers won the first dual meet by a final score of 44-3, with the lone victory for the Bears coming from Austin McBurney (149), who defeated Nebraska's Blake Cushing by decision 7-3. Another notable result was Cade Ziola defeating Alex Semenenko (285) via tech fall 20-5 (4:44). This marks the first loss of the season for Semenenko after beginning his senior campaign with an 8-0 record.Â
Next on the ledger for Bruno was a dual meet against Long Island University, where freshman Khimari Manns (141) picked up the first victory for Brown, defeating Amir Avazov by major decision 16-6. Austin McBurney (149) completed a 2-0 night by picking up a win against Tommy Bonasera, winning the match via tech fall 19-4 (6:42).Â
No. 29 Max Norman won his match against Jordan Barry via DQ (16-0), picking up his second dual meet win of the season. Drew Clearie (174) scored the only pinfall victory of either dual meet for the Bears, winning his match against Jack Valentin in 1:06. No. 31 Andrew Reall (197) earned a tech fall win over John Dusza 19-4 (6:22), adding to his impressive season and moving to 2-1 in dual meets this season.Â
Finishing the night with a win for Bruno was heavyweight Alex Semenenko (285), who won by a 2-0 decision against Chris Powell. That win moves Semenenko to 2-1 in dual meets and 9-1 on the season. Overall, the Bears defeated Long Island by a final score of 29-17, moving to 2-1 as a team in dual meets in the 2025 portion of their schedule.Â
