Men’s Basketball Falls 89-84 to Vermont in Double Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's basketball team (0-2) fell 89-84 to Vermont (3-0) in double overtime on Sunday afternoon inside the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"I thought our guys took a major step forward, our freshmen looked so much more comfortable and confident out there today," Men's Basketball Head Coaching Chair Mike Martin '04 said. "We'll grow from this one and we'll learn, there's a ton of learning opportunities from the experiences and different situations that came up in the game."
Brown opened the game on 6-0 run after making three of its first four shots. The Bears led the entire first half and led by as many as 12 with 9:54 remaining.
The Bears' bench scored 17 of its 32 first half points, Brady Loughlin led the way with eight points on 2-3 shooting from three-point range. Brown had assists on nine of its 11 first half baskets, Jeremiah Jenkins and Malcolm Wrisby-Jefferson each had three first half assists.
Adrian Uchidiuno gave Brown its largest lead of the game with a layup with 16:53 remaining in the second half, his layup pushed the Bears' lead to 39-26. Following Uchidiuno's layup, Vermont launched a 21-8 run over the next 6:25 to tie the game at 47 with 9:28 remaining in the second half.
Vermont then continued its run, taking a 12 point lead with 4:23 remaining in the second half.
The Catamounts' largest lead was 63-51 with 4:23 left. Brown mounted its comeback with seven quick points over the next 1:30 on baskets from Isaiah Langham, Loughlin, and Charlie O'Sullivan as Vermont's lead was cut to 63-58 with 2:53 remaining.
Brown went on to tie the game at 65 with 32 seconds left in regulation on two free throws from Jenkins, Vermont had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but the game headed to overtime.
With the game tied at 72 with 2:28 remaining in the first overtime, Vermont made two free throws to take a two point lead before Loughlin hit a three-pointer to give Brown a 75-74 lead.
The two teams went on to trade baskets as the Catamounts took a 78-77 lead with 36 seconds left. Jeremiah Jenkins' step back three-pointer gave Brown an 80-78 advantage with 25 seconds to go.
On the following Vermont possession, they had a chance to tie the game as TJ Long missed a three-pointer, but the Catamounts got the rebound as the ball went out of bounds with 0.6 seconds left. On the ensuing inbound pass, TJ Hurley scored to tie the game at 80, forcing a double overtime period.
The Catamounts outscored the Bears 9-4 in the second overtime frame to secure the victory.
N'famara Dabo finished with a career-high 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, he also blocked three shots. Jenkins recorded his first-ever double-double with 11 points and 10 assists, both were career highs.
In his second collegiate game, Loughlin netted 16 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor and 4-7 shooting from three-point range.
O'Sullivan continued his strong start to the season with 11 points after scoring eight in Brown's season opener. Uchidiuno grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in the contest.
Brown's bench scored 32 points, the most points by the bench since they scored 44 against Johnson & Wales last season. The Bears' 22 assists were the most since they had 23 against Columbia last season at home.
Brown will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 12 when they travel to Boston University, tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Case Gym.
