PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women's basketball team (10-9, 4-2 Ivy) defeated Penn (10-9, 1-5 Ivy) 65-57, on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center marking the Bears' third straight win.
Junior forward Alyssa Moreland continues to beat her own bests, setting another career-high in points and rebounds. Moreland played a large role in Brown's win over Dartmouth last Saturday posting 21 points and 16 rebounds. Tonight, Moreland netted 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds against the Quakers. Junior guard Grace Arnolie also netted 25 points, both leading the Bears in scoring.
The Bears went on an 8-0 run in the first quarter, giving them a five point advantage over Penn. The Quakers caught up to the Bears at the end of the quarter, and hit a late three to hold a two point edge over Brown.
Scoring bounced back and forth to start the second quarter. Moreland continued to drive her way through the paint to get the Bears back on top. Arnolie hit a clutch three-pointer ahead of the break to give the Bears the lead, with just one point separating the teams.
Competition remained tight throughout the third quarter, with Brown posting 16 points to Penn's 15. The Bears held onto the lead by a pair of points.
The Bears closed things out in the final 10 minutes, netting 21 points. Arnolie opened the quarter with a triple, setting the tone for the remaining time. Junior forward Beth Nelson made a layup to extend the Bears' advantage, before first-year guard Gia Powell topped things off with a pair of made free-throws.
