PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women's tennis team (1-0) opened their spring season with 4-3 a win over Boston College (1-1) on Monday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears had a strong start to the match, earning the doubles point after coming out on top at the first and second lines. Seniors Addison Ahlstrom and Lindsey Hofflander posted a 7-5 win over Boston College's Seren Agar and Nada Dimovska. Sophomore Dani Ben-Abraham and first-year Bella Hu teamed up at the second line, earning a 6-3 win over #75 Natalie Eordekian and Tola Glowacka. The Eagles' Olivia Benton and Alex Torre posted a 6-4 win over sophomore Hannah Shen and first-year Ali Maguy.
"I was happy to see how hard our team was competing today. We didn't start out well in doubles on court one and three, but our players put their heads down and worked for every point to turn their matches around. Bella and Dani set the tone with their line two doubles win, playing smart tennis. Lindsey and Addie got the doubles point for our team by playing aggressive doubles at line one, coming back from a large score deficit at the beginning of the match," Broadbent Family Women's Tennis Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
Brown collected three more wins throughout the singles matches. Senior Gabby Soliman earned her win at first singles over Natalie Eordekian (6-4, 6-4). Ahlstrom defeated Muskan Mahajan at the fourth line (6-4, 6-4). Boston College earned wins at the second, third, and sixth lines. The day came down to Hannah Shen and Tola Glowacka at the fifth line. Shen captured the win over the Eagles' Tola Glowacka in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-2), clinching the match for the Bears.
"In singles play, Gabby played smart and disciplined tennis at line one, beating a tough and tricky opponent. Gabby used her speed and weapon backhand to her advantage in her two set win that set the tone for the rest of the day. Addie used her experience and athleticism to beat her opponent at line four. She problem-solved really well and executed her game plan perfectly to bring us within one point of a win. Hannah, who clinched the match for the Bears, was composed and relentless in her win. With the match on the line, Hannah was fearless in her execution and poised in the critical stages of the match," Schmidhauser said.
Monday's victory marks the Bears' first win over Boston College in seven years.
