Men's Hockey Takes 3-2 Win Over St. Lawrence to Complete Season Sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (5-9-2, 3-7-1 ECAC) tallied a goal in each period and held off the St. Lawrence Saints (6-14-1, 2-6-1 ECAC) for a 3-2 home win and season sweep Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"It was a good win, we needed a win, and we needed to play the right way in order to give us a chance to win," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we were on top of it for the majority of that game. St. Lawrence had a good pushback in the third period, and we found a way to kill off three minutes of 6-on-5 for them.
"Again, it's a big win. I told the guys to just focus on the process. It was going pretty well then we had that eight-day span last week and you go from feeling really good about yourself to feeling really bad. Instead of burying your head, what you do is work your way through it.
"I thought our guys did a lot of things to be successful tonight. It gives us an opportunity to go for the sweep in our rink, you need to win at home and tomorrow's another opportunity against a really good hockey team. We're looking forward to it."
St. Lawrence opened the scoring 3:44 into the first period as Tyler Cristall finished a feed from Isaac Tremblay in the slot to beat Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (26 saves).
Ryan Shostak nearly tied the game off a great forecheck and feed from Brendan Clark with five minutes remaining in the first, but St. Lawrence goaltender Mason Kucenski (22 saves) made the stop. Two minutes later, Max Scott hit the post on Brown's first power play opportunity of the night.
With 39.3 seconds remaining in the first, Scott broke through the St. Lawrence defense off a pass from Tyler Kopff and was rewarded with a penalty shot after being taken down by Reilly Connors. Scott tallied his seventh goal of the season on the penalty shot to send the game to the second period tied at 1-1.
The Saints regained the lead 5:27 into the second period as Gunnar Thoreson found the back of the net for his third goal of the season with assists credited to Jan Olenginski and Gabe Westling.
Brendan Clark tallied an unassisted goal for the second straight game 10:38 into the second to draw the game even again. The senior forced a St. Lawrence turnover and held off a defenseman to beat Kucenski on the semi-breakaway.
Kopff broke through the defense less than a minute later, but his breakaway attempt was saved by Kucenski. A few minutes later, Kopff wired a shot from the slot that rang off the post.
The Bears killed off an extended St. Lawrence power play late in the period, including 64-seconds of 5-on-3 play, with Alex Pineau blocking three shots.
Pineau kept a Westling shot out of the net with 9:08 remaining in the third to keep the game tied at 2-2.
Ryan St. Louis gave the Bears a 3-2 lead with 8:01 remaining in the third with his second goal of the season. Initially waved off for a kicking motion, Brown won the challenge with Ryan Shostak and Brett Bliss picking up the assists.
Less than a minute later, Pineau hit Brown's third post of the night on a shot from the point.
St. Lawrence pulled Kucenski with 3:14 remaining in the third in search of the equalizer, but Zacher turned aside five shots and the Bears blocked four shots. Pineau played the entire 3:16 and blocked three St. Lawrence shots.
