Women’s Soccer Reclaims Crosstown Cup With 2-0 Win Over Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.i. - Second half goals from Aminata Davis and Nadja Meite helped give the Brown women's soccer team a 2-0 win over Providence at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Thursday night.
The Bears reclaim the Crosstown Cup from the Friars after falling 1-0 at Providence last season.
"We're glad the cup is back where it belongs," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I thought the team played tremendously, it was a tail of two halves, they had the better of us in the first half and we had the better of them in the second half."
Both teams tallied four shots in the opening 45 minutes as Bella Schopp kept the Friars off the scoresheet with three saves.
Brown had a number of chances in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to break the scoreless drought, Gianna De Priest, Kira Maguire, and Joy Okonye all had chances to give Brown the lead but came up short. Okonye's chance hit the post in the 59th minute.
Brown broke through in the 70th minute as Aminata Davis opened the scoring after Layla Shell stole the ball from the Friars and crossed the ball across the 18-yard box. The ball found the foot of Davis, who fired the ball over the Providence goalkeeper's head.
Nadja Meite doubled the Brown lead in the 86th minute after she followed up her own shot, Meite's rebound found the back of the net.
Brown out shot Providence 11-4 in the final 45 minutes, forcing the Providence goalkeeper to make five saves.
Bella Schopp recorded her second shutout of the season and second consecutive shutout at home as she recorded four saves.
"I think it was some nerves in the first half," McNeill added. "When we play Brown women's soccer and when we pressure we can force teams to turn the ball over and lock them in their half I think we're impossible to play against."
Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Ohio State, kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
