Men’s Soccer Opens Season with Win Over Lehigh

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown men's soccer began their 2024 season with a 2-1 victory over Lehigh University at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Friday night.

The night's first goal came at the 30th-minute mark from senior Mike Balleani, with an assist from junior Mads Stistrup Petersen. This marks Balleani's first career goal and Petersen's first point as a Bear.

Lehigh's Thomas Robertson responded early in the second half of the game after capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity. The Bears attempted to retaliate against Lehigh with another goal but was waived off by officials due to a foul.

Junior Jamin Gogo Peters ultimately scored the game-winning goal for Brown at 68:27. Senior Tanner Barry took the corner kick, and Gogo Peters headed it into the back of the net. This goal was enough to give the Bears an edge over the Mountain Hawks to secure their first win.

Junior goalkeeper Henrik Weiper made a total of six saves that were crucial to keeping Brown in the game. His first notable save of the night came around the 20-minute mark of the game, where he made a diving save to keep Lehigh off the board. Weiper also made a save for the Bears from a corner kick, holding the Mountain Hawks off in the opening 45 minutes.

The competition was tight until the very end with Brown totaling eight shots on goal with Lehigh tallying seven.

The Bears will return on Friday, September 6, when they head to College Park to take on Maryland at 7:30 p.m.
