Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Brown women's soccer team fell at Rhode Island 1-0 in its 2024 season opener on Friday evening.
"It's disappointing to drop our first game of the season," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Kudos to Rhode Island for a hard fought match. This group has only been together for two weeks and we showed that a little bit tonight. We have a lot of talent and it's going to take time to get it right and get on the same page. The good thing about this group is that they are willing to work and grow, any adversity we face now will help us get better in the long run."
The Bears (0-1) outshot the Rams (1-1) 15-8 through 90 minutes of action.
Naya Cardoza gave the Bears their best chance of the first half 6:14 into the contest but her low driving shot was stopped by Rhode Island goalkeeper Abigail McCarthy.
In the 30th minute, the Rams opened the scoring as a cross from Lauren McDonald found the foot of Sam Hagerty as she was able to bounce it past Bella Schopp the back of the net.
Brown went on to have eight total shots, four on target in the opening 45 minutes as they trailed 1-0 entering the second half.
The Bears' first shot on target of the second half came from Layla Shell in the 63rd minute. Shell's shot was pushed over the crossbar by McCarthy, resulting in Brown's first of four corner kicks of the second half.
Brown's best and final chance to tie the game came in the 87th minute, a cross from a Kira Maguire corner kick deflected around the box before the ball found Naya Cardoza, but her shot was stopped by McCarthy.
Shell and Cardoza combined for eight of Brown's 15 shots, both had four apiece. In goal for the Bears, Bella Schopp made three saves.
Brown will have a chance to bounce back on Monday, Aug. 26 when they welcome Kansas for its home opener at 1:00 p.m.
