ARLINGTON, Texas – Former Brown pitcher Charlie Beilenson '22 is headed to the pros after being selected in the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday afternoon.
Beilenson was selected in the fifth round (154th overall) by the Seattle Mariners on Monday, the second day of the three-day long 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. Beilenson becomes the 26th former Brown baseball player selected in the MLB Draft and marks the second consecutive year a Brown alum was drafted. He is the first top-five round draft choice since Richard Hand was also taken in the fifth round in 1976.
Beilenson graduated from Brown in 2022 before transferring to Duke, where he played out his final two years of eligibility. Over three seasons at Brown from 2019-2022 (the 2021 season was canceled due to the pandemic), Beilenson appeared in 26 games out of the bullpen striking out 36 batters in 40.0 innings. His best season came in 2022 when he made 15 appearances and held hitters to a .230 average, posting a 3.91 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 23.0 innings with four saves. On April 5, 2022 against Holy Cross, he earned the win in the first no-hitter in program history after tossing four perfect innings of relief.
Beilenson blossomed over the last two seasons for the Blue Devils, holding a 2.92 ERA, a 13-6 record, and 170 strikeouts over 123.1 innings of relief. In 2024, he led the ACC and tied for fourth in the nation this season with 12 saves and ranked second in the nation with a 2.01 ERA. He was named a First Team All-American by Perfect Game, ABCA/Rawlings, and the NCBWA. He was also named a finalist for Stopper of the Year and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.
Beilenson is the 26th Brown baseball player to be selected in the MLB Draft, following his former teammate Zach Fogel in 2023. Fogel also graduated from Brown in 2022 before playing a graduate year at UConn. The last player drafted directly out of Brown was Reid Anderson in 2018.
