5/19/2024 1:23:00 PM | Women's Crew
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The seventh-ranked Brown Bears won five medals on the final day of the Ivy League Championship and finished second in the team points standings on the Cooper River.
Brown's Second Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8, and C4 crews won gold medals and the A4 and B4 shells picked up bronze medals. Brown finished with 75 team points.
"While today's Ivy Championship did not end on the note that we had been building toward, there were certainly many excellent performances along the way," said head coach John Murphy. "We hope that our efforts will earn us a NCAA bid and if they do it will be the result of an exceptional year-long commitment by every member of our team."
The C4 shell, coxed by Ava Lewis, charged through the final half of the race to overtake Penn and Princeton to take the gold and earn six points for the team championship. The Bears clocked a time of 8:06.197 to cross the line ahead of the Quakers (8:10.161) and Tigers (8:12.852).
Brown's D4 crew competed in the B4 petite final against Cornell, Dartmouth, and Princeton's D4 shell. The Bears posted a time of 8:37.425 to finish fourth.
The Caitlyn Roddy coxed B4 crew took third in the Grand Final to add another six points to Brown's team total. The Bears took third with a time of 7:46.905 to finish behind first-place Princeton (7:31.660) and second-place Yale (7:42.471).
Another seven team points went to Bruno with a first-place finish in the Third Varsity 8 Grand Final. Brown crossed the line with a time of 7:00.970 to narrowly edge out Penn (7:03.360) and Yale (7:04.988).
The A4 crew captured a bronze finish with a time of 7:25.161, finishing behind Princeton (7:18.723) and Yale (7:22.593). The Bears picked up 12 team points with the third-place finish.
Isla Wilding stroked the Second Varsity 8 to a wire-to-wire victory in the Grand Final with a time of 6:40.802. The Bears jumped to an early lead and held off sprints from Princeton (6:47.347) and Yale (6:43.831) to earn the gold medal and 24 team points.
In the final race of the Championship, Brown was unable to mount a charge in the back half of the race to pass Princeton (6:30.520), Penn (6:33.035), or Yale (6:34.452) to finish fourth with a time of 6:39.157 and earn 20 team points.
Princeton grabbed the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy as Ivy League Champion with the V8 finish as well as the team points title and NCAA automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Championship.
Brown looks for its 27th consecutive NCAA Championship bid on Tuesday during the women's rowing selection show, airing at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
