#8 Women's Crew Set for 2024 NCAA Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The eighth-ranked Brown Bears are set to make its 27th-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance in Bethel, Ohio on East Fork/Harsha Lake. The Bears' First Varsity 8 is seeded ninth, while the Second Varsity 8 is seeded fourth and Varsity Four is seeded fifth.
Bruno is one of four Ivy programs competing at the 2022 NCAA Championship, joining Penn, Princeton, and Yale. Brown looks for its eighth NCAA Title since 1999 and first since 2011.
THE PATH TO A TITLE
· The 22 programs in the field compete for a national title based on a points system that weighs the finish of each boat in its respective race.
· The Championship begins with four heats for each of the three boats – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four – on Friday. The top two boats from each heat advance to the A/B semifinals.
· From there, the top three boats in each of the A/B semifinals move onto the grand final with the remainder proceeding to the petite final. The top three crews in the C/D semifinals advance to the C final while the rest compete in the D final.
· In the finals, each boat earns points based off its finish in its race, and the program with the most points between its three crews at the conclusion of all the races earns the title of NCAA Champion. Turn to page three for a complete points breakdown.
FRIDAY HEATS
· The Bears are the ninth seed in the V8 race and will square off against Texas, Syracuse, Duke, and Gonzaga at 9:48 a.m.
· The Bears are the fourth seed in the 2V8 race and will square off against Yale, Indiana, Ohio State, Rhode Island, and SMU at 11:12 a.m.
· The Bears are the fifth seed in the V4 race and will race against Yale, Rutgers, Virginia, Rhode Island, and SMU at noon.
THE VENUE
· The NCAA Championships will be held on East Fork/Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. It marks the first time the NCAA Championship will be held in Ohio.
· However, the Bears and Head Coach John Murphy and Associate Head Coach Phoebe Murphy are no strangers to the area. Brown competed in the Collegiate National Championship on Harsha Lake in 1991, 1994, 1995, and 1996 - capturing first place in the final iteration of the Collegiate National Championship in 1996.
THE 2024 FIELD
· The 22-team Championship field features 11 automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large selections.
· The Bears qualified for the Championship for the 27th straight season and have not missed a NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997, joining Princeton and Stanford as the lone programs to qualify for every NCAA Championship.
· Brown is one of four Ivy programs in the field along with AQ Princeton, Penn, and Yale.
· Four teams competing from the Ivy League is tied for the most of any conference in 2024 with the B1G (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State, Rutgers). The Pac-12 has three selections with AQ and defending Champions Stanford, Cal, and Washington and the ACC also has three in AQ Syracuse, Duke, and Virginia.
· The remaining eight programs in the field are Boston University, Gonzaga, Jacksonville, Northeastern, Rhode Island, SMU, Tennessee, and Texas.
THE STREAK IS ALIVE AND WELL
· The Bears earned their 27th consecutive berth to the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, May 21 to remain perfect and participate in every NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997.
· Brown is one of three teams to qualify for and compete in every Championship along with conference rival Princeton and west coast powerhouse Washington.
· In the previous 26 appearances, Brown has captured seven National Titles, three runner-up finishes, and five third-place finishes. In total, the Bears have finished in the top-three of the team standings in 15-of-24 Championships.
THE SEEDING
· After wrapping up the 2024 season with another title at Eastern Sprints and a second-place team finish at the Ivy League Championship, the Bears are ready for the NCAA Championships.
· Brown's V8 crew earned the nine seed while the 2V8 earned the four-seed and the Varsity 4 picked up the fifth seed.
· At the 2023 NCAA Championships, Brown finished seventh as a team, while the Varsity 8 finished 10th, the Second Varsity finishing seventh, and the Varsity four taking bronze.
SEEN MORE THAN HALF
· Out of the 21 other programs in the 2024 NCAA Championships field, the Bears have faced 12 of them during the season.
· Brown opened the spring slate in late March to face Princeton in a dual race and saw the Tigers again at the Ivy Championships.
· At the B1G Invitational, Brown raced against Duke, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, Rutgers, and SMU.
· At the Ivy League Invite, Brown faced off against Rutgers and saw the Scarlet Knights again at the Eastern Sprints.
· At the Eastern Sprints, Bruno competed against Boston U., Northeastern, and Rhode Island.
· Most recently, Brown faced Penn, Princeton, and Yale at the Ivy Championships.
THE IVY CHAMPIONSHIP
· Bruno took second in the team standings at the 2024 Ivy League Championships in Pennsauken, New Jersey. The Bears compiled 75 points to finish seven back of Princeton.
· The Second Varsity 8, 3V8, and C4 crews all took gold medals at the two-day Championship with the Varsity 8 finishing fourth in the Grand Final.
ALL-IVY SELECTIONS
· Dahlia Levine earned All-Ivy honors for the third time in her career after picking up Second Team honors last season and First Team accolades in 2021-22. Additionally, she was named a CRCA First Team All-American a season ago.
· Emily Jaudon picked up Second Team All-Ivy honors in 2024. She was a CRCA Second Team All-American last season.
· Eliza Atwood earned Academic All-Ivy honors after earning CRCA Scholar-Athlete accolades in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
SPRINTING TO SUCCESS
· Brown captured its third consecutive Eastern Sprints title with a dominating showing on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
· The Bears captured five Grand Final wins at the Sprints to win the team title for the third straight season.
· Brown won the team points trophy for the 13th time since 1990 and the Varsity 8 title for the 11th time since 1988.
BIG PERFORMANCE AT THE B1G
· Brown swept every race at the B1G Invitational in April down in Sarasota, Florida.
· The Bears were unbeaten over the two-day competition, taking down several NCAA teams in the process.
ROAD WARRIORS
· Brown spent the entire 2024 season on the road with zero home races on the Seekonk River.
· The Bears competed in Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York and will close out the season in Ohio at the NCAA Championships.
