CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown Bears won three matches to reach the finals against the host Harvard Crimson at the 2024 Crimson 7s, ultimately finishing second in the tournament on Sunday at Mignone Field.
The Bears took victories over AIC, Sacred Heart, and Quinnipiac to reach the Crimson 7s final.
"It was a phenomenal day for the Bears where we built a great deal of cohesion and built depth on our roster," said Rosalind Chou, the Kathleen Flores Women's Rugby Head Coach. "Lily Nowak, Sadie Wilson, and Jordan Wiseman were three freshmen that really stood out. Leadership from sophomores Julia Murray and Kate Muldoon kept the team steady throughout the day.
"We look forward to building on this into our Ivy competition in two weeks."
Akilah Cathey opened the day with an early try against AIC and Murray hit the conversion to make it 7-0. After AIC cut the Bruno lead to two, Murray touched down and added the conversion to make it 14-5. Before the half ended, Muldoon scored her first of the tournament and Murray added another conversion for a 21-5 lead at the break.
The Yellow Jackets cut into the lead halfway through the second half, but Jordan Wiseman capped the match against AIC with a try and Muldoon added the conversion for the 28-12 win.
Cathey opened the scoring for the second straight match against Sacred Heart and Nowak doubled the Brown lead 2:30 into the first half as the Bears cruised to a 22-14 win over the Pioneers to advance out of Pool B as the one-seed.
After Quinnipiac opened the scoring in the semifinal, the Bears quickly responded with tries from Cathey and Kate Muldoon with Julia Murray hitting both conversions to take a 14-5 halftime lead.
Nowak extended the lead to 19-5 with a long try before the Bobcats tallied a try and conversion as time expired to cut into the lead.
The Bears were strong from the start against the Crimson and Nowak broke through with 2:30 remaining in the first half to give Bruno the lead. Murray hit the conversion for the two points and 7-0 score. As time expired in the first half, Harvard's Cameron Fields broke free at midfield to score and the Crimson tied the score at 7-7 with the conversion.
With the Bears a player down following a yellow card, Reese Morgan gave the Crimson a 12-7 lead with six minutes remaining in the second half. Tianha Padilla broke through with 4:30 remaining to make it 17-7 Crimson.
Nowak recorded her second try of the match with 1:20 remaining and Murray hit the conversion to cut the Crimson lead to three at 17-14, but the hosts maintained possession to end the match with a victory.
Brown is off next weekend before returning to Cambridge on Saturday, April 20 to compete in the Ivy 7s.
