4/24/2024 1:30:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey honored its senior class and handed out team awards at its annual year-end banquet, held Friday night at the Brown Faculty Club. The program also handed out letter sweaters.
All awards, with the exception of Most Improved Player, are voted on by the team.
Co-Most Improved Players: Ava DeCoste and Elodie Roy
Ava DeCoste – First-Year Forward (Plymouth, Mass.)
Ava earned a regular shift instantly due to her tremendous skill set and ability to make plays, particularly at the offensive end. She started to hit her stride and showed up on the score sheet a third of the way into the season by assisting on two goals to secure a 3-3 tie at #5 Clarkson.
Just before the break, Ava chipped in her first goal of the season at UNH by netting the tying goal on the way to a 4-2 come-from-behind win. While the offensive production was destined to be a part of Ava's game, the development off the puck earns her the 'Most Improved' award - "Ava started to adapt to the physical component of the game to win wall battles, get in on the forecheck and to pick up second wave players on the backcheck," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "She became just as reliable a player to close out a game with a lead as she was when trying to score late."
Ava completed the season with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points to rank third on the team.
Elodie Roy - First Year Defense (Sherbrooke, Qué.):
Elodie arrived at Brown with a solid skill set and a threatening shot from the point. Her growth as a player has been in getting that shot through and becoming a reliable defender against some of the best players and teams in the country. "A lightbulb went on for Elo after the break and things just started to click for her on the defensive side," Ruzzi commented. "She was proving to be a consistent defender and earning ice down the stretch of tight games."
Alli McMillan Unsung Hero Award – Maya Mangiafico
Given to the player whose efforts have been critical to the success of the team but not often recognized from a statistical perspective
Maya Mangiafico - Senior Forward (Medfield, Mass.)
For the second consecutive year, Maya is honored by her teammates for her selfless and gritty style of play. She served as an alternate captain this season, played center but took shifts on defense on the penalty kill and was relied upon to take big faceoffs in critical minutes down the stretch of close games.
One of her teammates noted in the voting process "Maya embodies the essence of Brown Women's Ice Hockey. She exudes grit, competitiveness, and bravery on and off the ice. She sets the standard for what it means to be a true hockey player every day."
While she is relied upon for her defensive game, Maya also scored big goals this year, notching game winners at both UNH and Union. Maya finished the season with three goals and four assists for seven points.
Tara Mounsey Award for Best Defensive Player – Cameron Sikich
Cameron Sikich - Junior Defender (Thornhill, Ont.): For the second time, Cam is honored by her teammates for her defensive contributions (she won the award as a first-year in the 2021-22 season). Cam logged an average of 23:49 minutes per game and is relied on to produce at both ends of the ice. She led our team in blocked shots with 43 and led all defenders in points (1 goals, 10 assists for 11 points).
From one of her teammates "Cameron is not only skilled but also possesses a deep understanding of the game. Her presence on the ice elevates the team's competitiveness to a whole new level." Cam was recognized as an All-Ivy Honorable Mention.
Panda Cup – Meadow Carman
Awarded annually to that member of the Brown Women's Ice Hockey Team who, for the past season, has demonstrated outstanding team spirit, good sportswomanship and dedication to playing ice hockey.
Meadow Carman - Senior Defender (Barton, N.S.): For the third consecutive year, Meadow has been named the Panda Cup recipient by her teammates. Meadow was the team's Captain this year after serving as an Alternate Captain her junior season.
Comments from her peers include:
"Meadow has put her heart and soul into Brown Hockey these last 4 years. She is a leader and puts the team first- she deserves this award more than anyone."
"The kindest, most selfless person I've ever met. constantly put everyone before herself and did everything for the good of the team."
"Should just name this the 'Meadow Carman Panda Cup' at this point."
Most Valuable Player – Kaley Doyle
Kaley Doyle - Senior Goaltender (Livonia, Mich.): Kaley Doyle has been the backbone of this team since first putting on the jersey for Brown and served as an Alternate Captain this season.
She set a career high in saves (50) in an eventual OT loss to #6 Cornell. In a highlight weekend, she made 43 saves in a tie with #12 Princeton and earned the win the next night against #8 Quinnipiac. Doyle's career at Brown culminated in securing first round ECAC playoff victory, and an overtime shutout, over RPI. This season Kaley was recognized as the All-Ivy First Team Goaltender and was twice named the ECAC Goalie of the Week.
One of her teammates commented: "I think Doyle has kept us in so many games this year and has helped us come out on top as well. She is such an unbelievable goalie and we are so thankful to have had her for three years."
