PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown University women's tennis team continued their Ivy League play when they took on #50 Princeton on Saturday, ultimately losing the match 4-2.
Ali Benedetto and Addie Ahlstrom won their doubles match at the second line (6-3), but the Bears were unable to secure the doubles point. Princeton won first and third singles, awarding them the doubles point.
"Today's match was as close as they get and even though the score didn't go our way, our team battled on every court. We had some opportunities to close out a couple of matches, but we were not able to convert on these chances. As heartbreaking as today's loss was for the team, they have the ability and competitiveness to bounce back for tomorrow's match against Penn.
In doubles, Ali and Addie played smart doubles with a lot of variety and played well under pressure," Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said
The Bears were able to collect a pair of points during singles. Ali Benedetto had her second win of the afternoon at the second line over Princeton's Leena Bennetto (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Gabby Soliman beat Princeton's Maia Sung in two sets in third singles (6-4, 6-3). Princeton earned points at first, fifth, and sixth singles to secure their win.
"In singles, Gabby was absolutely fearless, especially in pressure scoreboard moments and implemented her gameplan perfectly. Ali overcame a dip in her level in the second set and played with courage and clarity to win the third set. Phoebe's and Dani's matches were very closely contested, but Princeton was just slightly better in the clutch moments," Schmidhauser said.
