Men's Lacrosse Holds Off #13 Princeton for Ivy Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (2-9, 1-3 Ivy League) jumped to a 6-0 lead and held off the 13th-ranked Princeton Tigers (7-4, 2-2 Ivy League) to take a 13-12 conference win Saturday afternoon in front of more than 1,000 fans at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
"I'm pretty proud of that team effort today," said head coach Mike Daly. "It took the entire team and they brought it. I am so happy for them and the assistant coaches as they have all stayed positive, fought to improve during some tough stretches, and they found a way to win today.
"Also, shoutout to Brown Women's Crew – especially the C4 boat – with some great wins down at the Ivy Invite today, so a great day for Brown and a great day for our family."
Spencer Hughes and Aidan McLane struck for consecutive goals to give the Bears a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
After three big saves from Connor Theriault (14 saves), Hughes added his second of the afternoon to make it 3-0 with 2:54 remaining in the opening frame.
Ben Locke took over to start the second quarter and tallied three straight goals to push Brown's lead to 6-0. Hughes assisted on Locke's first goal and Marcus Wertheim assisted on Locke's third of the game.
John Dunphey ended the Brown run with 7:14 remaining in the first half to cut into the lead. Chad Palumbo added a man-up goal 26 seconds later to cut the Brown lead to four at 6-2.
Hughes capped the hat trick with a man-up goal with 5:31 remaining to re-claim a five-goal lead at 7-2.
Coulter Mackesy and Tommy Barnds scored consecutive man-up goals in the final minute of the first half to cut Brown's lead to three at 7-4.
Princeton's Sean Cameron cut the lead to two less than two minutes into the third quarter for his first goal of the game. With 11:08 remaining, Tanner Burns struck for his first of the game with Wertheim assisting.
Tucker Wade, Mackesy, and Colin Burns struck for three straight goals halfway through the third quarter to even the score at 8-8 with 5:15 remaining.
Brown tallied three straight goals to open the fourth quarter and take an 11-8 lead with 12:30 remaining. McLane struck for his second and third goals of the game and Hughes added his fourth during the run.
Wade ended the Brown run with his second of the game with 11:21 remaining to bring the Tigers back within two.
Ben Scandone isolated a Princeton defender and wired a shot past Princeton's Michael Gianforcaro (13 saves) with 10:30 remaining to make it 12-9 Bears.
The Tigers responded with goals from Burns, Barnds, and Palumbo to level the score at 12-12 with 7:59 remaining.
Wertheim fought through traffic in front and beat Gianforcaro with 2:24 remaining to make it 13-12 Bears with his first goal of the afternoon.
Cave intercepted a Nate Kabiri pass with 1:55 remaining to end the Princeton threat, and a Brown timeout with 1:13 remaining gave Brown possession with a one-goal lead. Cave finished the game with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Theriault turned aside a last-second effort from Kabiri and Tyler Blackburn found the loose ball to seal the conference win for the Bears.
