Men's Crew Closes Out Weekend at IRA Sarasota Invitational
3/30/2024 6:56:00 PM | Men's Crew
SARASOTA, Fla – The Brown Bears wrapped up competition at the 2024 IRA Sarasota Invitational on Sunday, closing out two days of competition against some of the nation's top programs at Nathan Benderson Park.
"Competing on a world class race course against many of the top crews in the country was thrilling and informative," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "Over the two days of racing we got a very good view of where we stand relative to the competition and how we can make adjustments to improve and to prepare for the Championships later this Spring. All of our crews raced hard and well and this group is motivated and capable. In every event, our crews were able to challenge for a top spot in the race. The work that Assistant Coaches Rufus Biggs '19 and Scott Cockle have done to build our team has been impressive and the support we receive from everyone in Brown Athletics and from our parents and fans is highly motivating. I am excited to see what this team can accomplish over the course of the season ahead."
On Friday, Brown raced against Northeastern and Yale and took three wins over the Huskies and Bulldogs. Brown's JV8, 3V8 and 4V8 all captured wins while the Varsity 8 crossed the line 1.4 seconds behind the Yale crew. Yale retained the Albert Cup with the V8 win.
On Saturday, the Bears competed against Harvard, Northeastern, Stanford, Washington, and Yale and finished third in the team standings for the Benderson Cup.
Brown's V8, stroked by Nathan Swidler, clocked a time of 5:30.40 to finish fourth behind Harvard (5:27.02), Washington (5:27.69), and Yale (5:29.83). The Crimson retained the Stein Cup with the victory over Bruno.
Brown's JV8 posted a time of 5:38.97 to finish second behind Washington (5:32.69). The Bears narrowly edged out Yale (5:39.17) and Northeastern (5:40.41).
The 3V8, coxed by Elenna Seguin, crossed the line in 5:37.41 to finish second behind Washington (5:35.25).
Brown's 4V8 and 5V8 finished with respective times of 5:44.68 and 5:59.41.
The Bears are off next weekend before heading to Boston to take on Northeastern for the Dreissigacker Cup on Saturday, April 13.
