PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The seventh-ranked Brown Bears opened the 2024 spring season in difficult racing conditions Saturday morning against the 13th-ranked Boston University Terriers on the Seekonk River and ultimately swept the Terriers to retain the Michalson Cup.
"Everyone on the team brought great energy to the boathouse this morning," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "They were prepared and focused on the task at hand. All the crews raced well.
"It was a good start to the season and the performance gave us a lot to build on. It's a privilege to race against a strong opponent. The weather was challenging but manageable and we handled the situation and the conditions well."
The JV8 opened the day of racing with a convincing win over the Terriers, crossing the finish line in 5:37.31 to take an 11-second win over the BU shell.
The Varsity 8, stroked by Nathan Swidler, retained the Michalson Cup with an 11-second win over BU's top crew, posting a time of 5:29.01.
The third race of the day was another Bruno win in the 3V8 as the Brown crew, stroked by Cole Matlack, crossed the line in 5:40.38 for a five-second victory.
In the final race of the morning, Brown's 4V8 posted a time of 5:38.66 for a seven-second win over the Terriers. Brown's 5V8 posted a time of 5:52.66.
Following the race, Brown christened its newest shell, the Scott Hensel '67 P'94. Scott Hensel '94 joined the team for the ceremony along with former standout Albin Moser '67, a 1986 Brown Hall-of-Fame inductee.
The Bears head south to compete in the IRA Sarasota Invitational next weekend at Nathan Benderson Park. The Bears will take on #5 Harvard, #6 Northeastern, #8 Stanford, #3 Washington, and #4 Yale on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30.
