PHILADELPHIA – The 12th-ranked Penn Quakers (5-2, 1-0 Ivy League) pulled away from the Brown Bears (0-6, 0-1 Ivy League) and took an 11-6 home win in the conference opener Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.
"Credit to Mike Murphy and Penn, I felt they made a few key plays in the third quarter but I'm proud of our guys and their effort," said head coach Mike Daly. "We will find the plays and players we need to get our team over the hump."
Penn took a 2-0 lead through 15 minutes in a defensive battle at Franklin Field. Luke DiNola and Ben Smith scored at the start and end of the quarter for the early lead.
Jackson Wolfram and Aidan McLane responded in the second quarter to even the score at 2-2. Robert Schain struck for his first of the game with 9:45 remaining in the half and the Quakers would take a 3-2 lead into the break.
Connor Theriault (5 saves) finished the first half with four saves compared to six for Penn's Emmet Carroll (16 saves).
Marcus Wertheim tallied the first goal of the second half to even the score at 3-3 wit 11:58 remaining in the quarter. From there, Penn goals from Cam Rubin, Anthony McMullen, and Tynan Walsh pushed the Quaker lead to three, its biggest of the game.
Tanner Burns cut into the lead and made it 6-4 with three minutes remaining in the third, but Penn quickly struck as Walsh found the back of the net and Rubin capped the hat trick with consecutive goals to extend the lead to five.
Wolfram and McLane scored two goals in a 50-second span to cut Penn's lead to four halfway through the fourth, but Casey Mulligan's second goal of the season with six minutes to play gave Penn a five-goal cushion.
Brown returns to Stevenson-Pincince Field to host the UMass Minutemen (4-3, 0-0 A10) on Friday, March 22 at 3 p.m. Click here to purchase tickets.
