Women's Fencing Collects Two Top-10 Finishes at NCAA Northeast Regional

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Anika Breker finished fifth and Jessie Chen finished eighth in the foil as the Brown Bears wrapped up competition at the NCAA Northeast Regional at LIU on Sunday.
"I'm very proud of our Women's Fencing team and their courage and determination at perhaps the most difficult national qualifying tournament in the country," said head coach Alex Ripa. "They performed beyond expectations, and I hope we may have qualified two athletes to nationals. What a great way to cap off our season!"
Breker took seven wins and Chen took six wins in the Round of 12 to finish fifth and eighth, respectively. Breker finished the Regional with 20 bout victories after starting as the 26th seeded fencer. Chen also took 20 victories after beginning the day seeded 23rd.
Grace Li finished 26th in the foil with Apoorva Talwalkar and Samantha Chon finishing 38th and 46th, respectively.
Alexandra Tzou finished 15th in the sabre after picking up four wins in her first round of competition and two wins in the following round. Soph Bililies took 17th with five wins in the first round and two in the following.
Rounding out the sabre was Rebecca Whang finishing 21st after sweeping the opening round with six victories and Alyssa Sun taking 23rd after a five-win opening round.
Dasha Smuk finished 19th after advancing out of the opening round with a perfect 4-0 mark. She advanced through the second round with a 3-3 mark before picking up one win in the third round against Harvard's Isabella Chin, the third-place finisher.
Arianna Baffa and Amy Mao both picked up two wins in the opening round to finish 37th and 38th, respectively.
The selections for the 2024 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio will be announced on Tuesday, March 12th.
