2/24/2024 4:02:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College Friars (2-2, 0-0 Big East) tallied two late goals and added the overtime winner to take a 12-11 Ocean State Cup win over the Brown Bears (0-3, 0-0 Ivy League) Saturday at Chapey Field.
Jack Kelly led the Bears offensively with three goals and six points. His three assists and six points mark career-bests.
"It's obviously a disappointing result and as head coach, I take full responsibility for the outcome," said head coach Mike Daly. "Credit to Providence for making the plays it needed. I apologize to everyone that supports us on a daily basis and we will surely get this team to playing winning lacrosse and making the plays we need to win."
Ben Locke scored twice in the opening quarter and Spencer Hughes found the back of the net to give the Bears a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.
The Friars responded with five goals in the second quarter with Jack Kelly, Tanner Burns, and Jackson Wolfram scoring for Brown. For Wolfram, it marked his first collegiate goal.
PC extended its one-goal lead to 8-6 early in the third quarter before Wolfram and Marcus Wertheim tallied consecutive goals to tie the game heading to the fourth.
After Aidan McLane and Richie Joseph traded goals to open the final quarter, Kelly found the back of the net twice to push Brown's lead to 11-9 with 2:35 remaining.
Michael Chabra cut the lead to one with 1:05 remaining and tied the game with his fourth goal of the afternoon with 35 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Jack Horrigan scored the golden goal to give the Friars the win.
Brown is back in action next Saturday with a trip south to take on the 19th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas (1-2, 0-0 Big East). Saturday's game is set to begin at noon at Cooper Field.
