PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 14th-ranked Brown Bears (6-2-0, 4-2-0 ECAC) battled to the end against the 11th-ranked Cornell Big Red (4-3-1, 3-1-0 ECAC), ultimately falling 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Prior to puck drop, Brown Athletics honored Brown and Cornell Hockey legend Digit Murphy with a ceremonial puck drop. Murphy earned Ivy League Player of the Year honors at Cornell before serving as the head coach at Brown for over 20 years, leading the program to three National Championship appearances.
Cornell's Lily Delianedis struck for the afternoon's first goal 5:45 into the opening period, finding the rebound off the initial shot from Rose Dwyer to beat Brown goaltender Anya Zupkofska (33 saves).
Katie Chan doubled Cornell's lead 29 seconds into the second period, finishing a feed from Alyssa Regalado in the slot for her third goal of the season.
The Bears pressed in the third period looking for two goals to tie the game. With Zupkofska pulled for the extra attacker, Ava DeCoste brought the Bears within one with her fifth goal of the season. Olivia Fantino and Jade Iginla picked up the assists on the extra attacker power play goal.
