BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The Brown women's basketball team fell to the No. 25/24 Indiana Hoosiers 60-82 in their season opener on Monday night.
The Bears got the action started with a three pointer from sophomore guard Olivia Young just 30 seconds into the game. The Hoosiers retaliated two minutes later with a three pointer from Sydney Parrish.
A turnover by Indiana allowed first-year forward Aima Ofunrein to capitalize on the opportunity. Ofunrein powered through the Hoosiers and made a driving layup to grab Brown a couple of points.
The Hoosiers went on a seven point run before junior forward Beth Nelson put an end to it by hitting a jump shot.
The first quarter ended with Indiana leading 18-7.
Young continued her scoring trend by kicking off the second quarter with another three pointer. Senior guard Bella Mauricio, first-year guard Gia Powell, junior guard Grace Arnolie, and Beth Nelson all collected points in the second quarter.
The Hoosiers netted two free throws before the half extending their lead 39-21.
Midway through the third quarter the Bears went on a nine point tear, minimizing their scoring margin.
Grace Arnolie hit a stepback three pointer as a result of an Indiana turnover. The Hoosiers created another turnover from a bad pass that was intercepted by Aima Ofunrein. The ball was fed to Bella Mauricio, hitting back-to-back threes on turnovers.
The Bears continued to play a strong and competitive game until the clock ran out. Junior guard Mady Calhoun put up Brown's final three points with one minute left in the game.
Brown scored 33 points from three pointers compared to Indiana's 15. They also earned 15 of their points on the fast break against the Hoosiers' 13.
