Women's Basketball Earns First Win of Season at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- The Brown women's basketball team earned their first win of the 2024-25 season over the Monmouth University Hawks on Saturday afternoon. The Bears closed out the game with a 20 point advantage over the Hawks, 81-61.
Senior center Gianna Aiello had herself a career game, posting 23 points in Saturday afternoon's matchup. Aiello grabbed 14 rebounds, just shy of her career high of 18. She also went 7-for-9 at the free throw line.
Junior guard Grace Arnolie also played a strong game, wrapping up the contest with 21 points.
Freshman guard Gia Powell built upon her last game, posting 11 points in Saturday's matchup. She posted nine points in Monday's contest at Indiana. Powell tied her three point high with another three baskets against the Hawks.
The Bears got on the board first on a free throw opportunity. A foul by Monmouth's Belle Kranbuhl allowed Gianna Aiello to line up at the free throw line.
Monmouth went on a 5-0 run in the first quarter, rounding it out with an eight point advantage (15-7).
The Bears netted 50% of their three-pointers in the second quarter, going 3-for-6. They rallied before the half, minimizing Monmouth's lead to just three points (29-26).
Coming off the break, Brown returned to the game energized. Aiello began her scoring run, scoring 12 points in the third quarter. The Bears finished the quarter 11-for-16 in field goals, and 4-for-5 in free throws.
The Bears had a strong finish, going on a 17-0 run in the last five minutes of the game. Gianna Aiello scored the last pair of point on a layup, giving the Bears a comfortable 81-61 win.
UP NEXT
The Bears will host their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the Pizzitola Sports Center against Holy Cross. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
