Volleyball Tripped Up in Four Sets at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown volleyball (6-12, 3-5 Ivy) fell in a tough four-set match at Yale (13-3, 8-0 Ivy) on Saturday afternoon, 29-27, 25-20, 18-25, 25-18.

Hannah Flannery led all players in the match with 16 kills and hit .324. Mariia Sidorova also finished in double figures with 12 kills. Beau Vanderlaan and Kayla Griebl each had nine kills. Julia Kakkis reached 30 assists for the third-straight match with a career-high 38.

Four Bears finished with double-digit digs as Brown had 71 on the day. Jessie Golden finished with 22 to lead Brown and Kakkis had 13 for a double-double. Sidorova also picked up a double-double with 10 and Kayla Griebl had 12. At the net, Brown had nine blocks with Vanderlaan leads the way with four. Gabby Derrick and Kakkis each had three.

Brown had two set points at 24-23 and 25-24 in the first set but Yale fought off both points. The Bears then fought off a Yale set point at 27-26 but two-straight points from the Bulldogs ended the first set.

The offense struggled for the Bears, hitting just .077 in the second set. Brown trailed in the second 16-14 after a kill by Griebl but Yale scored five-straight points to take control of the set and closed out Brown with a 3-0 run.

The Bears built a four-point lead midway through set three but Yale pulled within one at 16-15. The Bears got a kill by Sidorova to stop the run and pushed their lead to 23-17 with a 5-0 run that featured two service aces by Golden. Kills by Griebl and Flannery ended the set for the Bears.

The fourth set was tied at 11 after a kill by Flannery but Yale used a 4-1 run to jump ahead. Brown fell behind by seven and could not make up the deficit, eventually falling in the match.
