Volleyball Sweeps Penn to Open Homestand

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (7-12, 4-5 Ivy) swept Penn (10-8, 4-5 Ivy), 25-23, 25-22, 26-24, in a tight battle on Friday night. Jessie Golden collected her 1,000th-career dig in the win.
Brown was led on offense by Kayla Griebl's 15 kills and Mariia Sidorova's 14 kills. Griebl finished the night hitting .361. Hannah Flannery finished just shy of double-figures with nine kills. The offense ran through Julia Kakkis, who finished the match with 37 assists.
On defense, Golden led the way with 18 digs, followed by 12 from Sidorova and a career-high 11 from Eve McLaury. At the net, Beau Vanderlaan and Flannery led Brown with three blocks each.
Penn took a 20-17 lead late in the first set but Brown fought back with a 6-0 run that featured three kills by Sidorova to give the Bears a 23-20 lead. Brown earned set point with a kill by Flannery at 24-22 and after Penn scored a point, Vanderlaan closed out the set with a kill.
Brown built an early lead in set two but Penn came back to take a 17-15 lead after an error from the Bears. Down 20-18, Brown again used another late run, scoring five-straight points, using two service aces from Kakkis. Penn pulled within one before a kill by Griebl and error from Penn ended the set.
Brown trailed by as much as five during the third set but continued to work its way back into the set. Down 23-20, a kill by Vanderlaan, ace by Golden and kill by Kakkis tied up the set. Penn earned set point at 24-23 but a kill by Griebl tied the score. Another kill by Kakkis gave Brown match point and an overpass by Penn was put down by Flannery on the next point to end the match.

Brown will host Princeton on Sunday at 2 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast on ESPNU.
