Field Hockey Captures 2-1 Non-Con Win Over American
10/20/2024 2:34:00 PM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (7-6, 3-2 Ivy League) dominated the American Eagles (8-7, 4-0 Patriot League) throughout the game and captured a 2-1 non-conference win Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
"Generating 25 shots is really challenging, especially after a hard-fought win over Columbia on Friday," said head coach Britt Broady. "Our gameplan today was to make it a passing game and to really make the ball do the work and our team was able to do that from the backfield forward.
"I'm excited about the momentum our team continues to build as we head into late October and we look forward to our next challenge in Cornell."
American's Kayleigh Missimer struck for the afternoon's first goal just 2:34 into the first quarter, finishing a centering pass from Emma Guydish.
"We have a mature team at this point, and we got back on task," Broady added on the early American goal. "A good team is going to score goals against us and that's the game of field hockey, it doesn't intimate us. We just get back on track and put one more in than they get."
From there, Brown clamped down and dominated the rest of the game, allowing just two more American shot attempts with minimal time spent in the Brown defensive zone.
Lexi Pellegrino collected a pass from Lucy Adams at the top of the circle and beat American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood (12 saves) for her sixth goal of the season to tie the game early in the second quarter.
Brown nearly took the lead late in the third quarter with consecutive shots from Zoe Lawrence and Catie Summers, but Underwood turned aside both to keep the score even at 1-1.
Kiersten Smith broke the deadlock with her fourth goal of the season with 8:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. Off Brown's 13th penalty corner of the game, Underwood made the initial save on Katie McCallum before Smith found the rebound and the back of the net for the game-winner.
