Agbasi’s School Record Highlights URI Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown junior thrower Chidinma Agbasi set a new program record in the weight throw on Saturday afternoon as the Bears competed at the URI Invitational.
Agbasi's record mark of 18.79 meters surpassed the previous school benchmark of 18.65m, which was set by Lacey Craker in 2013. The mark also surpassed Agbasi's previous personal record by a whopping 1.24 meters.
It was a strong day in the field events for the Bears, as the women took first place in all three jumping events, and Kendra Ezeama (15.38m) moved into fourth place on the program's all-time list with her winning shot put. Over on the men's side, Keith Daigneau also took first place in the weight throw.
Senior Chiamaka Odenigbo also strengthened her grip on the No. 8 spot in program history in the 60m hurdles.
WOMEN
Agbasi took home second place overall with her school record weight throw of 18.79 meters. She was followed by Jillian Leahy in third place at 17.20m, just one centimeter shy of her PR. Mackenzie Palinski (16.24m) took sixth and Michelyn Appiah (16.21) finished seventh with a new collegiate PR.
Over in the shot put, Ezeama moved from sixth to fourth place on the program's all-time list with her PR shot put of 15.38 meters to take first place. Appiah finished in seventh place of the shot put at 12.29m.
Brown swept the top spot in all three jumps, with, Odenigbo leading the way in the high jump, taking the gold by clearing 1.80 meters. Simone Dunbar PR'd to take home first place at 5.51 meters in the long jump. Sophomore Makaya Fofana captured first place in the triple jump at 11.40 meters. Sophomore Rachel Bibiu took eighth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump.
In the sprints, seniors Brooke Ury and Odenigbo finished one-two atop the 60 meter hurdles, with Ury finishing in 8.65 seconds and Odenigbo setting a new PR of 8.67 seconds, which tightens her grip on the No. 8 slot in program history in the event.
Senior Emma Gallant landed on the podium in third place after running 7.83 seconds in the finals of the 60 meter dash. Freshman Alyssa Jackson finished fourth, with Ury taking eighth.
First-year Maddelynn Brooks took home sixth place in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.07. The Bears had a pair of top five finishers in the 800 meters with Juli Gonzalez (2:21.60) and Danna Ofek (2:24.57) taking third and fifth, respectively. In the 1,000 meters, Julia Schriefer took home third place with a new college PR of 2:55.77.
Brown placed four in the top eight of the mile, a race that had 32 total finishers. Senior Stephanie Kriss took home third place (5:02.31), followed in fourth by Isolde McManus (5:02.63), Katie Orchard (5:03.79) in sixth and Maxine Montoya (5:11.29) in eighth.
In the relays, Brown's 4x400m team of Gallant, Jackson, Odenigbo and Adrienne Usher took third place in 4:01.90. In the 4x800m, Kriss, Orchard, Montoya and Ofek placed runner-up in 9:35.65.
MEN
Running in just his second career meet, Elias Archie took third place in the finals of the 60 meter dash, finishing in 6.93 seconds, shaving 0.13 seconds off his time from last week's meet. Marcus Gillespie took home second place in the 60 meter hurdles with his finals time of 8.17.
Jake Haley took seventh in the 500 meters in 1:07.85 for a new PR. Brown took three of the top six spots in the 1,000 meters, led by Jesse Edelstein in second place in 2:29.69. Matthew Doherty finished third in 2:31.60 and Geordie Young took sixth in 2:34.54.
In the mile, Evan Sherman took home the bronze (4:19.87), while Tommy Gaffey also earned a bronze in the 3,000 meters, with Sam Colton finishing fourth.
In the relays, Brown's 4x400m squad of Emmett Forrestel, Jason Estrada, Daniel Sarisky and Jack Kelley took home first place in 3:25.53.
In the long jump, first-year Salter Arms finished fourth overall with a collegiate PR of 6.91m, followed by JonCarlo Migaly in fifth place.
In the throws, Daigneau took home first place in the weight throw at 17.72m. Fellow first-year Ethan Wordell took fourth place at 15.97m. Freshman Karon Johnson took fifth place in the shot put and set a new collegiate PR in the weight throw.
Brown will compete next this coming Friday, January 26 with a trip to The Armory in NYC for the Columbia Challenge.
