Strong Fourth Quarter Sends Women’s Basketball Past Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – A strong fourth quarter and a career-high 25 points from sophomore Grace Arnolie helped send the Brown women's basketball team past Cornell 64-53 on Saturday afternoon. The win moves Brown to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in Ivy League play for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
The game saw nine lead changes and four ties through a closely contested first three quarters before the Bears caught fire in the fourth to pull away. Arnolie scored 15 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 from three-point range, while the Bears shot 8-for-9 as a team in the frame.
Brown shot 42.6 percent (23-for-54) overall including 9-for-23 from three-point range, and held Cornell to just 35 percent shooting and 4-for-14 from beyond the arc. Brown had 12 turnovers on the afternoon while forcing 18 Cornell miscues and outscoring the Big Red 19-2 off turnovers. Cornell held a 45-31 edge on the glass.
Arnolie shot 9-of-18 from the floor and tied her career-high with six three-pointers. Senior Kyla Jones added 13 points, four steals and four assists while going 5-of-10 from the field. Junior Isabella Mauricio added 10 points and sophomore Ada Anamekwe added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Cornell took a game-high eight-point lead in the first quarter before Brown scored seven of the final nine points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 13-10 after one. Brown grabbed its first lead in the second quarter with five quick points following a triple by Mauricio and layup by Anamekwe to make it 20-17 at the 6:32 mark. Cornell carried a 27-26 lead into halftime after a layup in the final minute.
Back-to-back layups from Anamekwe gave the Bears one-point leads midway through the quarter. Overall, Cornell outscored Brown 10-8 in the third quarter and held a 37-34 lead entering the fourth.
Cornell took a 42-39 lead at 8:13 of the fourth quarter, but did not connect on another field goal until there were 45 seconds left in regulation. The Bears exploded offensively and took control of the game, rattling off a 14-1 run and connecting on six of their seven shots during the run, getting the lead to double digits on a three-pointer by Olivia Young with 3:29 left. The lead grew to as much as 12 on four occasions as Brown pulled away for the victory.
The Bears will return to action at home next Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. when they host Dartmouth in an Ivy League matchup at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
