Track and Field Competes at UMass Flagship Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brown track and field programs took home five gold medals on Sunday at the UMass Flagship Indoor Invitational at the Track at New Balance in Boston. Senior jumper John McNeil took home first in the men's long jump, while Marcus Gillespie also improved his top-five time in program history in the 60-meter hurdles. Lauren Yeboah-Kodie (triple jump), Jada Joseph (long jump), Rudecia Bernard (high jump) and the 4x800 meter relay team all earned victories on the women's side.
MEN
In the 60-meter hurdles, Gillespie improved his PR by 0.02 seconds in the prelims by finishing in 8.06 seconds, tightening his grip on the No. 5 time in program history. He then took home fourth place in the finals with a time of 8.12.
In the 60-meter dash, sophomore Solomon Miller qualified for the finals after finishing eighth in the prelims, then taking fourth in the finals, crossing the line in 6.92 seconds. Daniel Sarisky led the team in 14th place of the 200 meters in 22.11 seconds and senior Jack Kelley finished eighth overall in the 400 meters in 49.23.
In the long jump, McNeil took home the individual title in the long jump for the second consecutive meet by leaping 7.30 meters. Sophomore Frank Monahan-Morang (7.19m) and senior Zach Love (7.10m) took home fourth and fifth, respectively.
Karon Johnson took seventh in the shot put and PR'd in the weight throw (12.84m). A pair of first-years led the Bears in the weight throw by landing on the podium, with Keith Daigneau (17.73m) taking second place, followed by Ethan Wordell (16.97m) in third.
WOMEN
In the sprints, senior program record holder Brooke Ury took home second place overall in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.58 seconds.
Senior Emma Gallant hit an ECAC qualifying time of 25.16 in the 200 meters to place seventh, while freshman Alyssa Jackson set a new PR of 25.31 to finish eighth. In the 400 meters, sophomore Jenna Lowrey took home seventh place in 58.15m, and freshman Scarlett Stimson ran 3:01.99 to finish eighth in the 1,000 meters.
The Bears did pick up a victory courtesy of the 4x800m relay team of Juli Gonzalez, Tanisha Patil, Stimson and Katrina Sortland, who finished nearly nine seconds ahead of the second place team in 9:28.83
Over in the jumps, the Bears swept the top spot in all three jumps with Bernard clearing 1.75 meters to take home the gold in the high jump. Joseph took the top prize in the long jump with a mark of 5.98 meters. Brown athletes took three of the top four spots in the triple jump, with Yeboah-Kodie (12.63m) taking home the gold, followed by Joseph in third at 12.48m and senior Chiamaka Odenigbo (11.79m) in fourth.
In the throws, Kendra Ezeama took home third place in the shot put at 14.17 meters, and in the weigh throw, first-year Jillian Leahy (16.92m) and junior Chidinma Agbasi (16.72m) took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the weight throw.
The Bears will return to action this coming Saturday, January 20 with the URI Invitational in Kingston.
