Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball dropped a four-set match to Princeton on Friday night, losing 25-21, 25-19, 16-25, 25-20.
Brown (9-3, 0-2 Ivy) was led on offense by 13 kills from Kate Sheire and 11 kills by both Kayla Griebl and Beau Vanderlaan. Mariia Sidorova finished the match with nine kills. Cierra Jenkins guided Brown's offense with 41 assists.
On defense, Brown was led by Jessie Golden who had 24 digs and Griebl added 11 for a double-double.
Isabella Bonatakis had a career-best six blocks and Vanderlaan added four.
Brown was outhit by Princeton (6-5, 3-0 Ivy) .286 to .167 in the first set as the Tigers jumped out to an early lead. Brown came back from down 7-2 to take a lead at 15-13 and again at 18-17 but the Tigers scored five out of six points to take a 22-19 lead and held off Brown the rest of the way.
The Bears offense continued to struggle in set two, hitting just .089 as the Tigers quickly had another five-point lead. Brown tried to climb back in the set but Princeton had an answer for every comeback as the Bears wouldn't get closer than three at any point.
Down 2-0 in the match, Brown opened the third set with five-straight points and took an 11-3 lead after a kill by Jenkins. Back-to-back kills by Vanderlaan and Griebl put Brown up 13-4. Princeton tried to close the game but Brown responded as kills by Jenkins, Sidorova and Sheire ended the set.
Looking to force a fifth set, Brown used a 4-0 run to go up 10-6 but Princeton scored five of six points to tie the set. The teams traded points until a block by Vanderlaan put Brown up 16-14. A kill by Sidorova made the score 17-15 but Princeton used a 9-1 run to put an end to any Brown comeback.

Brown will be back in action with a match against Penn at home on Saturday (Sept. 30) beginning at 5 p.m.
