Volleyball Sweeps Penn on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (10-3, 1-2 Ivy) cruised to a 3-0 win over Penn (2-12, 0-4 Ivy), 25-14, 25-18, 25-14, on Saturday night. Isabella Bonatakis finished the night with a career-high nine kills for Brown.
Bonatakis was tied for the team lead in kills with Mariia Sidorova with nine kills. Bonatakis finished the match hitting .615 on the night as Brown hit .343 as a team.
Kate Sheire finished the night with eight kills, while Cierra Jenkins and Beau Vanderlaan each had seven. Jenkins also guided the offense with 31 assists and hit .636.
Jessie Golden led the defense with 18 digs and Kayla Griebl tallied 11. At the net, Brown was led by four blocks from Vanderlaan. Brown's defense held Penn to hitting just .061 on the night, including .031 in the second set and 0.00 in the third.
The Bears got off to a good start in the first set with six-straight points that featured kills from Jenkins, Sidorova, Bonatakis, Sheire and Griebl. A 5-0 run made it 18-6 in favor of Brown. Bonatakis, who had seven kills in the first set, finished off the set with a kill.
Set two featured runs by both teams early on as Penn held a 13-11 lead. The Quakers pushed the lead to 17-14 before Brown responded as Vanderlaan had two kills a teamed with Jenkins for a block. A kill by Jenkins capped a 5-0 run that made it 19-17 Brown. After Penn scored to make it 19-18, Brown captured the last six points of the set.
Brown jumped on Penn early in the third, making it 11-5 after multiple kills by Vanderlaan and Sidorova. The Bears took control of the set with a 9-1 run to go ahead 21-8. After Penn fought off three match points, Jenkins finished off the contest with a kill.

Ivy League play continues for the Bears as Brown will hit the road for games at Columbia and Cornell next weekend.
